This one man has changed everyones life, not just the US. Thank you to the servicemen of the world. And thank you to the special forces who made it happen.

As one terrible chapter closes, I am hopeful for the next. But I turn the page cautiously.

BOOM!!! Headshot!!!!

hahahaha and they "took custody of" the body. So did they use flex cuffs, hand cuffs, or did they just throw him in the back of the humvee and drive into the sunset? I'm hoping for the latter.

Yes, this was done by some very high-speed individuals. Did you see the Georgetown cheerleaders in front of the white house? hahahaha.

Oh it's gonna get better. Once we find #2, which I think won't be long if history is any indication.

It was probably a team of twenty to thirty special forces troops. One of their helicopters was damaged in the operation and later destroyed by the SOF troops themselves.

Now the reports from ABC News says it was NOT a joint ops with the Pakistanis. There were women and children in the compound who were not harmed. None of our guys were wounded.

CBS News says Osama was shot in the head. Human intelligence was crucial in finding Bin Laden, they say, which means somebody snitched him out.

Wikipedia has already updated Bin Laden's entry with the date of his death. So it's final.

ABC News says US intelligence identified two of Bin Laden's couriers. After years, they led them to Bin Laden's compound, which was custom built around 2005 to hide someone. The attack was made with two helicopers full of Navy SEALs. The attack lasted forty minutes. During the asssault, two of Bin Laden's couriers were killed, one of Bin Laden's sons was killed, and a woman used as a shield by one of the Al Qaeda terrorists was also killed.

UPDATE

Osama's mansion was right in the middle of the town of Abottabad. It had steel walls, which didn't do him much good. No TV, no phones. They burned their trash. So, it was conspicuous as hell. Osama was hiding in plain sight. obviously with the help of the Pakistani government and townsfolk. There was a military garrison nearby.

The SEALs choppered in from Afghanistan. There was hand to hand combat.

The Wall Street Journal reports reaction from the Arab world:

?Bin Laden is finally?.dead! I?m the happiest arab on the planet!? tweeted @randajarrar just minutes after the news of his death broke around 10 p.m. Sunday night. Another tweeter, @majda72 wrote ?as a Saudi I?m please about Bin Laden?s death.?

It appears only the couriers returned fire, perhaps Bin Laden, too.

Chicago Breaking News gives some reaction:

More than a dozen people dining at the Gareeb Nawaz Restaurant -- a Pakistani and Indian restaurant along Devon Avenue on the Far North Side -- watched CNN's coverage of bin Laden's death on a big-screen television saying very little to one another.

Shehbaz Mirza, a Muslim of Indian descent, says bin Laden's death is not just good for Islam, it's good for the world.

"He's a terrorist," Mirza, 32, said. "Osama is not a man who the Muslim people follow."

Another Muslim, 26-year-old Syed Bukhari, concurred. He said he has a brother who was living in New York City during 9/11 after moving from Pakistan.

"What (bin Laden) did in Pakistan is not good. What he did here is not good," said Bukhari, who is Pakistani. "Because of what he did, he deserved (to die)."

The crowd outside the White House is growing, looks like over a thousand, mostly kids draped in American flags. Who knew kids from Dupont Circle had American flags?

Another crowd of hundreds is gathering in Times Square, Manhattan.

Ny Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/world/asia/osama-bin-laden-is-killed.html?hp

WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the most devastating attack on American soil in modern times and the most hunted man in the world, was killed in a firefight with United States forces in Pakistan on Sunday, President Obama announced.

In a dramatic late-night appearance in the East Room of the White House, Mr. Obama declared that “justice has been done” as he disclosed that American military and C.I.A. operatives had finally cornered Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda who had eluded them for nearly a decade, and shot him to death at a compound in Pakistan.

Associated Press release:

By NAHAL TOOSI, Associated Press – 47 mins ago

ISLAMABAD – Osama bin Laden was holed up in a two-story house 100 yards from a Pakistani military academy when four helicopters carrying U.S. anti-terror forces swooped in the early morning hours of Monday and killed him.

Flames rose Monday from the building that was the apparent target of the raid as it was confirmed that the world's most wanted fugitive died not in a cave, but in a town best known as a garrison for the Pakistani military. A U.S. official said one of bin Laden's sons was also killed in the raid alone with three others, but the official did not name the son or the others killed.

Pakistani officials and a witness said bin Laden's guards opened fire from the roof of the building, and one of the choppers crashed. The sound of at least two explosions rocked the small northwestern town of Abbottabad where the al-Qaida chief made his last stand. The U.S. said no Americans were harmed in the raid.

Abbottabad is home to at least one regiment of the Pakistani army, is dotted with military buildings and home to thousands of army personnel. Surrounded by hills and with mountains in the distance, it is less than half a days drive from the border region with Afghanistan, where most intelligence assessments believed bin Laden was holed up.

The news he was killed in an army town in Pakistan will raise more pointed questions of how he managed to evade capture and whether Pakistan's military and intelligence leadership knew of his whereabouts and sheltered him. Critics have long accused elements of Pakistan's security establishment of protecting bin Laden, though Islamabad has always denied this.

Abbotabad resident Mohammad Haroon Rasheed said the raid happened about 1:15 a.m. local time.

"I heard a thundering sound, followed by heavy firing. Then firing suddenly stopped. Then more thundering, then a big blast," he said. "In the morning when we went out to see what happened, some helicopter wreckage was lying in an open field."

He said the house was 100 meters (yards) away from the gate of the academy.

A Pakistani official in the town said fighters on the roof opened fire on the choppers as they came close to the building with rocket propelled grenades. Another official said four helicopters took off from the Ghazi air base in northwest Pakistan.

Last summer, the U.S. army was based in Ghazi to help out in the aftermath of the floods.

Women and children were taken into custody during the raid, he said.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

Lmao. Well, so long as Wikipedia says it, its definitely final.

If that was the compound, he definitely couldn't have made it any easier for a helicopter insertion, hm? Even our Air Assault squad could have pulled that one off. :gun:
