London Trip

Recommended Posts

I'm heading to London this coming weekend for work, will be staying in the Canary Wharf district til next Friday. I only have a few hours here and there to be a tourist, so for you somewhat locals, got any tips on what sight-seeing items would be best?

I would appreciate it if you would post some pictures afterward so that I, too, can vicariously enjoy your trip. :)

If you only have a few hours, go to a pub! I've never been to England, but anywhere where I've travelled and had a few hours to spare, my funnest times were spent drinking with the locals. Well, except that time in Savannah where my buddy gave some homeless guys a drink and they followed us around all night....

Plenty of museums to visit in London that all all free to enter such as the British Museum which has one of the most famous and extensive collections in the world (back in the glorious days of the empire we sailed around nicking everything from the natives that wasn't nailed down). There is also the Science Museum which is quite fun to explore and the Imperial War Museum is worth a visit too. If you fancy visiting a British WW2 Cruise then there's HMS Belfast to visit on the Thames but you have to pay to get in.

To be honest there is so much to do in London, usually in so little time. You should definitely get yourself into a local pub and have a pint or two. After you've tried some traditional pubs you should give the Bavarian Beerhouse a visit for some German(ish) Beer and cuisine. Had a few Maßkrüge there in my time and the service is pretty good too! The downside to the pubs in London though is the price of drinks and food.

Then theres always the Tower of London to visit and if you're lucky you'll get this guy giving you the tour:

I'd reccommend watching all four parts as it's pretty funny and informative at the same time!

Windsor Castle

Buckingham palace may allow tours

Hampton court definately used to.

Tower of London

If you go to Buckingham palace, you can visit Trafalgar square (Nelsons Column), the national potrait Gallery and 10 Dowining street, all on foot. The parks there are pretty.

Tours in Buckingham Palace start on 23 July, you can stand outside and marvel at the building - would suggest that a bus tour might be the best bet to see everything "in-passing" and get some photos for the family.

Windsor is some way out - but the Tower of London is in easy reach and has the "key" ceremony daily. The V&A, Science and Natural History Museums are all in the same area of Kensington - you could do Harrods as well on the same day.

As Zeno says, Trafalgar Sq, Whitehall, Downing Street, Horseguards and The Houses of Parliment are all within walking distance of each other and you can pick up an MP3 that will tour the area at your own pace and provide the history.

Imperial War Museum is worth a visit and is fairly central.

Within spitting distance of Canary Wharf, I have checked Excel - there is only a Health and Safety conference on and the O2 Arena has the British Music Experience. Do you know where you are staying - are you in the east?
