NoScream~SPARTA~ Posted December 17, 2009 Share Posted December 17, 2009 While looking for a new AV receiver to replace my 11 year old YAMAHA DSP-A2 A/V amp with a HDMI A/V amp. http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/av...s/ht/dspa2.html I decided on 2 contenders, Onkyo SR707 or Yamaha RX-V1065, both priced similarly. Both pack similar functions, I've heard the RX-V1065 in action and it has the usual deep warm Yamaha sound but the Onkyo has a Directional Correlation Deinterlacing (DCDi), I think this might be worth the risk of moving from Yamaha. NoScream~SPARTA~ Posted December 17, 2009 Author Share Posted December 17, 2009 I agree, the Yam is solid, it just the Digital Standard def. content that I'm concerned about on a 50" plasma. I personally love YAM's and there is no real reason to replace except for the HDMI links which my AMP does not support, all the new 720 & 1080p stuff has my current AV equipment at a loss and I need to move into 2010 with a modern AV system. The A2 is still great but the lack on no HDMI is a real killer. I will look into Sound & Vision @ Bolton tomorrow if it is not Snowing... and get a demo in shop...... My intention is to stream Computer content along with HD to the screen, this is a mix of old 480i, 720i & 1080i/p plus some low quality old divX to see if it's still good for viewing on the big screen..... I've never owned a ONKYO but I read good stuff from owners/ users but then shop guys say get the Yamaha, I don't know if they are pushing the Yam's or it's just that they sound that much better that it's noticeable...... Rooster Posted December 17, 2009 Share Posted December 17, 2009 Okay, being an old die hard stereo audiophile fan I was going to make a solid argument for the Yamaha. Slightly lower THD% on average with better amplifiers make it a only so slightly more capable amp in terms of sound quality. BUT... All bets are off because I just noticed that NewEgg has the Onkyo on sale for $599.99 so these amps are no longer compatible in price. At $599.99 the Onkyo is a much better amp. Considering the price performance ratio I would say it is a no brainer to buy the Onkyo. Not only do you have a better rear end layout with the Onkyo but the new Onkyo amps are known for their Absolute Ground Plate which will minimize the "buzz" or interference/feedback between inputs. The Onkyo also uses buss bars so in theory there is less distortion potential using this kind of setup. Phew! What kind of speaker setup are you going to be driving with these? I recently bought a new surround sound setup myself and am running a set of Klipsch speakers with a powered 15" Cerwin vega sub. Something to be had for quality for sure. Hope this helps! We have non hd digital cable tv over here and the reciever ups it to HD not the same as HD direct from cable, but the image improves so much'... Cars dvd we can now see the cars individually in the public were with my old reciever dvd combo we couldn't..... ans in combination with the 504E sacd player and a set of audio pro speakers this reciever gives me gooosebumps when playing Santana, Carmina Burana or Pink Floyd...... For some reasion I never did, Its a early 5.1 system. I bought the sony speaker set to go with it. I had to double up the front channel speakers becouse at 1/2 volume @250 watts they bottom out. Sence when it was made sony went down hill in quality real fast. I put on Terminator 2 crank it up and the pictures my wife has on top the speakers will viberate and fall off on to the floor. I don't know about their new stuff but this older one I have is good enough for me. Its so powerful it will hurt your ears. I Have been looking at the Pioneers if mine ever dies. It's 2 years old, in "excellent" condition & he's looking for around £80. Reviews I've found are very good, is this good value & will it have plenty of life left in it?
