(Is this RAM gonna be to slow? I dont want bottle necking) Can I raise the speeds/timing? Is it all that important?

I will be using my old CPU Core 2 Duo E6600, I will be OCing hopefully with a lil help.

I will also be using my WD Raptor 10,000 RPM from my rig I have now. (trying to save $$$)

PSU Im not to sure about, I want some extra power for future upgrading but dont wanna go over board. For some reason Im being picky about it having 2 fans (PSU). Any suggestions would be great, also someone said to make sure the rails will support what I have.

The only thing I really get wishy washy about is the ram.....ive heard sooo much about timings and speeds and all that.....and what type of ram I get makes a differance on what mobo I get....so lemmi have it fellas....what do you think? Im not trying to spend more than what I need but I there Is a better combo of parts and not that much more, i say why not pay a lil more for the bangin hardware. thanks.gif I will be checking forums every 5 mins for your input banana.gif gun.gif im starting to get hyped!!!!!

DirTy cheers.gif

ps....i copied and pasted this from another site so I wouldnt have to type it all out again...hope its cool.

I use similar OCZ ram (2 x 1Gb) with same GPU and CPU on a ASUS mobo it should run fine. Your mobo choice is what I should have got and I use a Zalman 600W PSU with only one fan (120mm tho) it works great.

Have fun mate.

Well you got a great buildl going on there. Maybe go with a bigger p/s=800watt the 8800gtx is power hungry vid card! And ram prices have fallen way down now. Maybe go pc 8000 or 8500 ram. I heard some of very top end ddr2 ram was qurkie. The asuse board "striker" is a very good one. Go to the motherboard webb sight and look up that board and check the recomended ram for that board. OCZ should be ok. But some boards are paticular on the mfg of ram that is used. Build it!

Hi Dirty,

I have the striker extreme on 2 machines. On one I have 2gb of corsair dominators which was expensive and didnt work, but worked fine with the board once it was replaced. on the other machine I have 2Gb DDR2 OCZ Reaper 4-4-4-15 HPC wich was cheaper and worked perfectly out of the box.

for cooling I have a zalman CNPS9700 on one machine and an Asus silent knight on the other, despite being smaller the cpu runs cooler on the Asus silent knight (both machines are quad cores) so I would recommend the Asus Silent knight.

Good luck with your new build.

Funny you should mention that Zeno about the silent knight heat sink, I was looking at it like "this thing looks bad ass!" but wasn't sure because Ive not heard anyone peak of it till now. I'm gonna get the silent knight for sure now. Thanks a million guys.....i really do appreciate the help, I want this comp to be as good as possible. :) :thanks: again!

DirTy

ps only now I'm looking at a different board.

This is just a little more than the striker board and has the new 38x north bridge on it, from what ive heard this is a very nice board as well as the striker board.

let me know what you think of this board.

Just read the link mate and it will not support sli if you ever want 2x88oo cards and the heatpipe stuff means some cpu coolers are not compatible. From what I have read the striker MOBO is the muts nuts, Zeno is not the only one using it I believe Viiiper has one can't get a better recomendation than that.

LOL Viiiper has 2 Striker Extreme boards, my last build

CPU Intel QX6850 Quad 3.0Ghz FSB 1333

Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler

Striker Extreme Mobo

HPC Reaper 8500 but 6500 is just as good

BFG 8800 GTX OC2 768Mb (626Mhz)

Enemax Galaxy 1000W

Twin boot XP/ Vista ON 2 BOOT DRIVES

Striker EX mobo is very stable motherboar 300GB/s ports (SATA2) + 1 external. Backlite, LCD back panel built in with diagnostics, over clock with ease (QX unlocked CPU is a perk)

Save money on ram go for DDR2 PC6400 (800Mhz) lowest clock numbers

3-3-3-12 or 4-4-4-15 reaper is good and cheap

GTX is great, sli if more needed in future or update to Nvidia 98xx in new year.

PSU 700+ watts

120mm coolers big and easy fits the Striker with all it's heatpipes

Zalman CNPS9700-NT

Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)

Best of luck but I think Zeno & Majestic have Strikers too (zeno with 2 aswell)

AWESOME.....this is the type of input i need to make a good choice. But Custard.....i looked and it said it has 2 x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, support at full x16, x16 speed??? Isnt this mean SLI????

Well by tonight I may place my order.......thanks for all the help guys....HEHE....i knew viiiper would give up the down and low eventually....thanks....i respect yall's opinion highly. :)

Viiiper (memorey) so the lower the timing numbers the better?....sorry im such a noob when it comes to RAM.

Yes lower better

2 things dictate performance of memory the frequency (speed) and the timings (in cpu access clocks)

So 800mhz @ 4-4-4-4 timing means 4 clks for access 4 clks for read etc etc....

So memory running @ 1200 5-5-5-5 needs 5 clocks to access 5 to read etc etc...

Now the important bit, the clock tic toc of 1200 is 1/1200 of a second so 5 clocks is 5/1200

800mhz ran @ 4 is 4/800, question which is faster?

5/1200 or 4/800

Well if your good at maths 5/1200 is a smaller number so there it is but if you got 3/800 then

3/800 is smaller number so that is faster

converting to decimals to make it more obvious.

5/1200 = 0.00416

4/800 = 0.005

3/800 = 0.0037

all in seconds (time) miliseconds mS

;)

problem is, you pay alot more for less clocks so 5 is normally cheaper than 4, than 3

Hey zeno man.....Ive been reading the reviews on the silent knight and a lot of people are saying it wont mount horizontally??? How is yours mounted? and the rest of you guys if you have the silent knight.ok rig updateIm 99% sure im going with the ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA / SE LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard, I kNOW I KNOW....it dosnt support sli...only im pretty sure im not going to be getting ANOTHER $600.00 video card any time soon any ways.....after reading the reviews on the striker board I was turned off on it.Also I gonna go ahead and get the Q6600 quad core cpuRAMhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820227191Gonna try this heat sink insted of the zalman 9700, it looks so sexy dont it.http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16835101007PSU

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16817256024I also upgraded my 8800 gtx to the 8800gtx oc2http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16814143093Case...think the PSU will fit in this one AZ? without covering the fan space?http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16811146018Thanks guys, this has been exhausting......lol.Link to the asus maximus boardhttp://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16813131221

The Silent knight does touch a couple of the cooling fins of the motherboard, but it fits correctly (even if only very slightly fiddly) The Zalman fit with no probs at all. The OCZ reaper HPC ram is tall and some cpu coolers could foul on them.

New egg are having issues right now so I cant see the items.

If you go for the Q6600 make sure it has GO stepping (it allows better OC'ing in the quad, someone chime in if they know more). I think the Q6600 was replaced by the Q6700 so you may be seeing old stock.

good luck with your build
