Video Card Advice

Here is what I have now for a system...

cpu = E6600 Duo core @ 2.4G

Ram = 4 gigs (I think it is PC800)

Vid card = 8800GT 512 meg

I think the vid card is the weak point (correct me if I'm wrong on any of this) and I would like to upgrade the graphics. Of course I'd like to get the most bang for the buck with a budget of $200-250 CDN.

I have not kept up on what is new/better/must have etc. I do want it to have 1 gig of mem. ATI or Nvidia, I am totally lost?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, here are some I am looking at...

Sapphire HD4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E @ $195

Nvid 260

another 260

Thanking y'all in advance

I'm sure you probably already know, but the 260 you're looking at only carried 896mb of memory. Don't ask me to tell you the difference, lol!

I'm not up to date on the conversion rate for CDN to USD, but here's a list of cards from the $200-300 price range in USD.

And here's a list for $100-200 USD

This is just me, but I'm more comfortable with Nvidia. I'm used to their software (control panel) and I'm not sure what other maufacturers have. I do know that when I changed my motherboard to an Asus, I couldn't understand their software like the temp reader as well as I could the Intel boards. That might/might not be a factor in your decision.

RViii pointed out DX10 cards are due suggesting it might be worth waiting until then as the new cards will drive down the price of older cards

I would recommend you try to get a card with 1Gb memory

Wait untill the end of the year and treat yourself with a new card for christmas. The 250 cards are only rebagded 9800 cards. 260 newer models has the newer 216 achitecture.

U need at least 1gb on your future card.

Oh yes buy a 9550 core2quad cpu if u want to upgrade. They are dirt cheap right now. Cheaper than a 8600core2duo and a lot better.

thats my next upgrade and i am running a 8800GTX. I rather upgrade the cpu right now than the gpu

  • 2 weeks later...

Think of DX11 as a polished version of dx10. Its not a huge change but more of a step in the right direction fixing a lot of problems and adding efficiency.

Think of Windows Vista to Windows 7. Lots of optimization to go around.

I'll find a link that gives more detail tomorrow if no one beats me to it.

How does this video card look to you guys? (i'm trying to stay under $300, but get the best I can at that price)

Or what about this one? The only difference I can understand is the 1790gb memory (up there^) and only 1gb memory down here.

The 8800GT 512MB should be ok, like others have said, hold off wait for the DX11 cards, they are faster than the current

crop of cards. Windows seven is due end of October and that is a big difference.

The new DX11 cards will carry the code: 5xxx from Ati & 3xx from Nvidia

I just upgraded my system & used my old 8800GTX 768Mb card. See http://www.legionofspartans.com/forums/ind...?showtopic=4215

Since I have an 8800 GTS 320, the GTX275 I have my eye on is 6 tiers higher, is that right or am I reading it wrong?

It might be six higher but this table shows the real performance gain/ loss

viii

p.s. You can now see the real reason they deleted/ stopped selling the 9800 GTX2

thankfully Cobol, majestic & me got in just before they did ;)

Ok, so I finally broke down and decided to buy the GTX 275 with 1750 memory. Ordered it yesterday, and it's been shipped and already out for delivery this afternoon. Yay! I've decided to keep my old 8800gts and make a computer for my wife out of old parts.

Anyone familiar with the 275 series and know how best to tweak it for Arma2? I'll probably look at the BIS forums, but thought some others might have a little insight here.

The Nvidia 275 GTX 1792Mb is a powerful card and requires no tweaking, it's 25%+ more powerful in flat testing than your previous card, tweaking may run it hotter, get Everest to check the true core temp of the GPU

http://www.lavalys.com/

Overclocking the CPU will be more than 5x more beneficial as most of ARMAII processing is done there.

Lifting the CPU from default by 200-300Mhz will produce improvements on all CPU cores.

275 with 1792Mb GTX

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/dis...275-1792mb.html

Highs:

* Successfully competes against ATI Radeon HD 4890;

* Barely yields to GeForce GTX 285;

* 1792 MB of local video memory onboard;

* Wide range of supported FSAA modes;

* Minimal effect of enabled FSAA on performance;

* PhysX acceleration support in the GPU;

* Hardware HD video decoding;

* S/PDIF sound over HDMI;

* Relatively low power consumption and heat dissipation;

* Low noise;

* Pretty good overclocking potential.

Lows:

* No DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 support;

* Incomplete VC-1 decoding support;

* No built-in sound core;

* High power consumption compared with Radeon HD 4890;
