PC Died - PSU?

My rig just expired, as it was booting. Switched it on and maybe 15 seconds in just stopped and now there's no response when I push the on switch.

Consequently I'm guessing the psu has gone?

Prior to switching on there was a constant high pitch tone coming from the case, not loud just audible with out background noise.

The power light is illuminated on the psu, so it's taking a feed from the socket but there's no life in it at all.

So, am I right is the psu or could there be another issue? I don't have another psu to swap in so wanted a double check before I splurge the cash, thanks.

psu or mobo, certainly a lot easier to find out if you had a spare psu.

do you have a multi meter?

this guy is pretty handy for virus and malware removal but i just found he does a nice guide for testing a psu with a multimeter

more info than you probably need, but hey it's a useful diagram:

PSU was toast, still it must be 7 years old at least and did a good job. It was a Hiper 580w modular.

Picked up an OCZ ZS 650w from PC World, with an online offer it came in at £6 cheaper than Overclockers, so not too painful.

Just completed a system repair run and all seems good, so no peripheral damage caused by the psu failing.
