Going shooting redneck style, need advice

Recommended Posts

I'm getting together with my friend on private land this Saturday and he said we will shot "redneck style".Till now i allways shoot at certified shooting ranges.

What to expect? Any advices how to make it fun??

Shooting, in and of itself, is fun.

no beer, at least, you shouldn't drink.

Be safe. Don't shoot anyone.

Make your ammo last, grill some BBQ and enjoy the day outside.

Are you shooting rifles, pistols, shotguns or all three? Bring some targets you can't usually shoot at the ranges; watermelons, water jugs, oranges, etc. Alternatively, bring some paper targets and find something to use as a stand and try some 3-gun style stuff (shooting on the move and from behind cover). That's what we do when I vist my friend's ranch down SLO.

Here's how we set it up:

We had 4 silhouettes set up about 20 feet apart, two of which were partially behind trees. You'd start behind another tree 100 yards away with my buddy's AR in your hands, my 870 slung and my 1911 in a holster. The other person would yell 'GO!' and you'd have to hit one of the obscured targets twice, then drop the rifle, and move to a wood pile ~40 yards away. While moving you unslung the 870 and hit a second target with 3 slugs. Then you dropped the 870 and moved to a barricade we made out of an old palette. On the way you drew the 1911 and put 5 rounds in the remaining clear target. Once you reached the barricade, you reloaded and put your remaining rounds into the last target (the one partially behind the tree). Best time without tossing any shots wins a 6-pack from the other guy (to be consumed only after the guns were cased up). It was quite possibly the most fun I've ever had shooting, and I shoot at least once a week.

Think about all the stuff you'd like to try that isn't allowed at the local ranges (shooting on the move, drawing from a holster, 2-gun transitions, etc.) and, as long as you can do it safely, have at it.

(PS. Range shooting is still a ton of fun. I see you're in San Jose. Come out to the Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club some time, if you haven't already. I'm there every Tuesday after wook and about every other Saturday. I'm the guy wearing a ridiculous looking long coat out on the trap range.)

With that accent, you better bring your papers

nah, get yourself a 12pack of coke and shoot them. A redneck shoot isn't fun unless you got yourself some shaken up coke cans to shoot at. Or bottles.

Not sure whatcha'll talking bout but a redneck shootout means someone is gonna do soemthign stupid, and alcohol is to blame. Not that I'd condone that or suggest you mix that kerosene with the propane while toying with the magnesium lighter, but just to be clear there is a difference between safe firearm BBQ fun as you suggest (and I do to) and redneck pie-row-tech-necks.

I was in R&G once couple years ago. That only range aroung letting you shoot water canisters , right?

My friend is living in Livermore and we usually shoot there.

As for guns (i don't/cannot own one), we usually shoots M1, Garand and carabine, mosin's, SKS, AR15 some .22LR rifles. Depends who come in.

Good tip in canned soda :)

Halli, no gasoline and propane, we will be in the dry mountains, well mby not now, but its fire hazard area.

I don't know what "soda" is, but hell, if ya can't shoot drunk, how are you gonna be prepared when the shit hits the fan and things are flying all around and you're dizzy from all the concussions? Or, more domestically speaking, how are ya gonna know how well you can shoot when you've just woken up at 3am and an intruder is rummaging through your porn collection? Mr. Miagi trained just like this

And Kal, I went hunting with some of my cousin's friends once and they tried something close to that. They had the bright idea of doing it with a potato gun, but stuffing it with acorns instead to make "grapeshot" out of it. Oh, and they pointed it straight up in the air.

Don't forget to take a break!

:) learned that lesson with SKS. I tried to chk how reliable they are and fired around 100 rounds one after another. Stock start sweating and i was afraid its going to burn. But there was no jams, no fire and accuracy does not suffer much.

I have work/school tomorrow unfortunately. My brother-in-law may be up there, he usually attends events like that--he attended that tea party we had a while back.

As for that left-handed M4, me want.

Southpaws unite!
