  3. It's not that it's impossible for birdshot to disable an attacker, and it's great for making really nasty looking flesh wounds, but it lacks the mass to reliably penetrate deep enough to be effective. Why put yourself at a disadvantage? See rule 11 below.
  4. Given the massive number of 870s out there, there are bound to be a couple of duds. Once you get yours, go shoot it a bunch and figure out if you got one of the few bad ones. If so, don't hesitate to send it back. Remington CS is great and will make it right. One common complaint I've heard and personally witnessed is that the Winchester AA shells will cause jams. Avoid those, there are plenty of other good shells out there for busting clays/birds. For HD/self defense, find some good buckshot, #4 or larger. Birdshot is for birds.
  5. I'd pass. I played through just to finish it and immediately uninstalled. There are a lot of bad design choices. In a game that is largely about sneaking around, having invisble walls and inconsistent geometry is a killer. Imagine seeing a great hide and spending 15 minutes avoiding guards to get there, only to realize that it's 'out of bounds' and you can't actually reach it. Tack on a couple of points where the game auto-kills you if you don't do the 'right' thing, but also doesn't tell you what the right thing is and a couple of poorly done run-n-gun levels and you end up with something I wish I hadn't wasted $10 on.
  6. I’m going to combine several posts into one, so here goes: Medic, nice choice on the 870, they are great guns. Mine’s an Express too, although it’s older, probably 1980s or so. I really need to take some pictures of the arsenal and post them up. I put way more rounds through my trap guns than this one though, so I kept the standard style stock. Specifically I put a Speedfeed on there, it’s a regular stock that holds 4 extra rounds, because I’m not a big fan of side saddles. ( http://www.speedfeedinc.com/productsmain.html look for the Speedfeed I stock about halfway down.) I've got 6 rounds of 00 in the tube, plus 1 in the chamber. The only reason I want extra ammo on the gun is so I can have slugs handy, and if I need more than 4 I'm in some really deep shit. I also went with the Surefire fore-end, although I will warn you that many swivel plates require so reworking to keep them from interfering with the light. Other than that, the Surefire is awesome. I’ve never used a bandoleer, but I’ve heard that they tend to not stay very tight and getting shells out of them is tricky. I’ll recommend the Federal Tactical buckshot if you’re looking for tight patterns, it shoots sub 3” at 25 yards out of my 18” barrel. SkeleTele, 1100’s are nice guns, but you’ll be able to find an 870 much cheaper. Pumps tend to be less finicky with ammo than semi’s and you can work it fast enough for skeet. I would definitely recommend a 12 gauge, it’s way more versatile for clay games than 20. Most people I know shoot a 26” barrel in any autoloader (pump, semi or Mossberg's crazy bolt action shotgun). Double or single barrel guns tend to have longer barrels but the overall length of the gun is pretty similar since you don’t have any appreciable action length. While barrel length does have some effect on pattern, the choke is the primary contributor. Get a barrel with screw-in chokes and you’ll be fine. Skeet is typically shot with a cylinder or improved cylinder choke while trap is shot with improved modified or even full chokes. Yankee’s advice about holding the gun before you buy is critical, you want to make sure it feels comfortable and ideally puts about 2” between your nose and the thumb of your shooting hand. His advice about shooting is also great; most new shooters don’t follow through. Make sure the gun is moving smoothly through the target before, during and after your trigger pull. You’ll be dusting them in no time.
  7. Uggghhhhhh. At first I just laughed at the magazine fumble that they had about 5 seconds in. Then you get to 1:30 and realized that these idiots are going to kill someone; probably sooner rather than later.
  8. Why run, fighting is WAY too mainstream for hipsters. They'll just curl up in a ball and cry for a while. Plus, your average padlock weighs just as much as a hipster, so chances are good that they won't be able to get up.
  9. Wow, I really hope you're joking. Especially since more than half of the ND's and other mistakes in that video were made by men. Add to that the fact that most of the mistakes made by women were due to their inexperience and some ass-hat giving them a gun that was way too powerful for a new shooter and not instructing them on proper stance/grip/etc and I fail to see how you draw that conclusion. I guess xkcd sums it up well: As far as I'm concerned, guys that give girls shotguns and laugh when they get hurt are no better than wife-beaters. ETA: Here's at leats one woman who can out-shoot all of us.
  10. I'll offer another set of answers, out of order. 2) Burial at sea is an accetpable Muslim tradition and it denies his followers a monument of any kind. Not to mention the fact that no one wanted his body on their soil. 3) See above. I agree that releasing photos of him would have inflamed anti-Western sentiments in many parts of the Middle East. 1) Here's the big one. Because shooting him is quick. Ideally, I would have loved to see him dragged back to the US, tried in NY and then executed. But that's a terrible idea for several reasons: i) As long as he was being held there would be a huge incentive for his followers to take hostages or commit other acts of terrorism to get him released. ii) It would take FOREVER to have him actually executed. Death row inmates stay there for years as it is and the higher-profile the case, the longer it lasts. iii) It would be impossible to find an impartial jury anywhere in the US or Europe. Ultimately, keeping him alive that long would dilute the sense of satisfaction and closure that his swift death brought us. Very smart, VERY political move.

  12. From my understanding, it used to be that steering a tank was controlled by two brake levers, one for each track. Brake the left track, go left, etc. Now, steering is done through a wheel similar to a car with computerized control system handling the braking of the tracks. Anyone know when this change was made or which tank was the first one with the new system? Google has failed me on the matter.
  13. Jeff, I agree, especially the part about bringing friends, but the medic should not be trying to attain fire superiority on his own, especially with the new ACE wounds. I was talking more about engaging groups of AI that are engaging another, unrelated group, or worse yet, engaging enemies that haven't even spotted you yet.
  14. JHunter, I'm with you 100%, especially when it concerns the medics. I try to focus on healing/reviving whenever I'm on, but too often I see medics engage new targets after someone goes down. If they enemy isn't preventing you from reaching the wounded soldier, don't give them a reason to start. If they are, half the time a smoke grenade does a better job of getting you there than bullets. Shooting draws attention to you. That said, some comm improvements would make life much easier for medics. I don't know all of you by voice yet, so if you need healing, make sure you announce who you are and whether or not you can come to me or if I need to get to you. "Hey Orc, heal me" is bad. "Orc, JHunter's legs are shot out" is much better. I am making a formal promise here though: I am willing to play dedicated medic anytime I'm on. If I'm in a medic slot and you've announced you're dead or wounded, I will try to get you back in the fight ASAP. If I'm not doing that, call me out on it and I'll either give you a damn good reason why or an apology followed by a dead sprint to your location.
  15. I'd love to get in on this. I'm free on Friday and potnetially on Saterday, I won't know for sure until later in the week. I'd also like to volunteer to be a medic, knowing full well that I may not fire a shot the whole time. I just need to get a new keyboard first, but I'll be sure to mess around with the ACE medic module before we start.
  16. Can we apply the same trimming of functionally equivalent but cosmetically different guns to the main ammo box as well? I'm not a huge fan of having my Metis shunted off into a Russian RH box to make room for 17 different colors of M4. Makes it more difficult to reload in the field when you can't grab ammo from the one box we can call in. I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of the RH pack as it seems the weapons very poorly balanced/modeled in parison to the regular gun, but if other people want to use them it's no skin off my nose.

  18. I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but ever since ACE 1.7 I've had issues with the earplugs. I can get them and equip them just fine, but when I die they disappear. It's a real problem because half the time they haven't respaned in the ammo box, so I'm without them for a while. I've checked my userconfig file and everything seems fine. Anyone else have this problem and/or know how to fix it? If it's not something we can fix could we maybe add multiple earplugs to the ammo box? ETA: ACE 1.8 did not fix this for me.

  20. It depends on how you define modern history. Prior to WWI it was common for people to own guns and carry them on a regular basis. Rifle marksmanship was taught in school. In the early 1900s it was expected that the unarmed police officers could rely on a nearby civilian to furnish them with a gun should they need it. Things have changed significantly in the last 100 years, in the US and the UK, but both countries have a strong tradition of civilian firearm ownership. Regardless, it wasn't an apples-to-apples comparison, so I took it back. Durka, Castle Doctrine is a far cry away from a zero-tolerance policy. Self-defense law in the US comes down to the idea that you can use deadly force if you believe you are in imminent danger of death or grave bodily harm. Castle doctrines generally all state that in your house, faced with an intruder who entered illegally, you can assume danger exists without additional threat. Basically, you don't have to wait for the intruder to threaten you or your family, the fact that they willingly broke in is good enough. If you don't feel morally comfortable with that, then you have the option to not use force. If you don't want to get shot, don't break into peoples homes. Keep in mind, trials are costly, not just to the state but also to the defendant. They are incredibly emotionally and financially taxing, serious criminal trials even more so. There will always be a police investigation following a shooting, but taking every single self-defense shooter to trial is not in the public interest.
  21. I'll retract my comment based on the fact that it may not be relevant due to cultural differences, but to say that it is factually wrong is incorrect. My understanding is that the UK allows for a 'reasonable' amount of force to be used in the prevention of a violent crime. The difficulty is that the it is the court who decides what is reasonable after the fact. That, coupled with the aforementioned cultural beliefs, means that you stand a very real chance of ending up in jail if you use force to defend yourself.
