And while I catch my breath, I look back at all of the people still running their hardest even though they know, in their hearts and minds, that they cannot win first place. The pain and sweat and tears. All for naught. Their hearts pound like drums each coming so close to its breaking point. Not from the physical exertion, but the emotional strain, knowing they will not win. As I watch, I grimace on the outside from the strain and demand of the three hours prior. On the inside I smile and gaffaw at those who did not come in first. And as we all know second place might as well be last place. Â What does second place feel like?
