web-hosting

Recommended Posts

My sister has a web-site that she thinks is topo expensive and doesn't offer the facilities that she requires to be able to run her business.

She spent a small fortune a couple of years ago, well 3.5K having someone form her space.

It is currently up and hosted and has a page for clients to contact her. She is looking to have the following in addition:

a number of email accounts, she currently just has one which is her name@her_domain

Also if she wishes to use another provider how does the migration thing work?

Thanks

http://www.dashcobe.com is the site

I would be surprised if her current provider/host didn't offer up to five email accounts for free I would suggest she try them first.

I used to be able to change the names/pw's of my accounts on the hoof but my provider has changed ownership 3 times in the last 5 years and that service is unavailable now, if they don't address this by the time I have to renew I will be looking for a new provider/host.

Best of luck

I use Media Temple. They have a few different "packages" to choose from, tech support has always a pleasure to work with, and just generally have nothing bad to say about them. As far as the migration goes, it should be pretty straight forward. Just copying the files from one server to another, correcting the links, and transferring the domain name. None of which are complicated.

who is the current host?

transferring shouldn't be a big problem, just make sure she downloasd all the files from the host so she can upload them to the new host.

the only thing you have to change from the domain side is the nameservers in the control panel for your domain name host

erm it will current be somehting like

nameserver1: ns1.currentwebhost.co.uk

nameserver2: ns2.currentwebhost.co.uk

then she whoudl change it to

nameserver1: ns1.newwebhost.co.uk

nameserver2: ns2.newwebhost.co.uk

but these things are always well documented on the hosts site, and also on the domain name provider's site.

Slicehost for me. But it's completely bare bones and a bit more complex than most require. If you're not tech savvy enough to manage the server yourself or don't need all of that flexibility, then this isn't for you. But, if that's what you're in for, this is a great option.
