The new tax classes (by year & emission level) relate to when the car is was first registered, as new, not when you register it as a new owner.

So, in very simple terms, to avoid potential big tax bills if you have want a high emission (sporty or 4x4 car), don't buy anything that was registered after the 2001 date.

Watchman is 100% spot on,

Vehicles reg. after 2001 will fall into the table shown in your link.

Best being BAND A but most eco cars are in BANDS B & C

Example a car reg. 2003 (AD53 DER) private plate ;) engine 1.4 (1398 cc) CO2 = 120mg

TAX will be for 1 YEAR

£35 petrol or diesel

SAME CAR but the 2000 Model reg. Y360 ADD ;) engine 1.4 (1398 cc) CO2 = 120mg

TAX will be for 1 YEAR

£120 petrol or diesel

CHEAPER TO GET THE NEWER VERSION for the eg. CAR
