  1. Yes: I have installed 64bit Windows 7 Yes: With 2 x 2GB it boots to Windows 7 but with 4 x 2GB it doesn't get to Windows 7. In fact it was hard work just to get to into the Bios setup screens. All 4 DIMMS are Kingston Hyper PC8500, bought as 2 matched pairs. Each pair works as 2 x 2GB install but I haven't mixed the pairs. Also have always used the 1st & 3rd slots when running 4GB. Thought this was required, so I'll try "nd & 4th slots to rule those out. Away for the weekend so wont get back on the pc until Monday night but in the mean time I'll explore ASUS / Kingston compatibility issues and all those other suggestions made. Thanks for the support and ideas so far.
  2. I recently changed my RAM to Kingston PC8500, installing 4 gig (2x 2 gig) and another 4 gig in reserve for when I upgraded to Windows 7. My mobo is an Asus P5B with I believe latest bios - 1.06.59. Well, I installed Windows 7 tonight and after getting the basics done figured I'd whack in the other 4 gig. Now I know they work as I'd previously put them in to make sure but when I have all 8 gig in the pc wont start up. I get the initial boot up text and according to that it sees the 8 gig, actually showed 7.something but wouldn't go to windows. It even put up a message saying unknown CPU?? As soon as I took the extra 4 gig out, hey presto, here I am. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong. When I OC'd the CPU with Jokers help we tweaked the DRAM settings but I've looked there again and can't see anything obvious. Does a mobo come as standard with a max RAM allowed and have to be changed??????? All help greatly appreciated EDIT: Checking system info, it says I have:- Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00GB Total Physical Memory 2.94GB Available Physical Memory 1.98GB Prior to the Windows 7 install I was running 32 bit XP Pro and that showed my RAM as 2.94GB, same as above. Is this just coincidence or do I have some issue left over from XP?
  3. That's a nice drink but not one that I can drink large quantities of, too sweet. Charles Wells' mainstream beer,Bombardier (Drink of England) is another cracking brew, prpbably my No. 2
  4. Theakstons Old Peculier, 10/10....... 11/10 if it had been on draft. This is the best beer on the face of the planet, if you don't agree you're probably dead..... or gay......... or both!
  5. Is the 64 bit issue just a Vista thing or will it still be there once I install Windows 7 64? I actually started to dl the game last night but my piss-poor broadband decided to drop my 10mb service down to 0.8 so I gave up!! Engineer is out tonight to look things over and fix it, hopefully but not much point dl'ing AA3 if I'll see whatever these 64 bit issues are. Thx
  6. Not that one pair of feet walking has that much effect but if console gaming is where this is going I'll find a new hobby. Never been a console fan and too old to start now.
  7. Just signed the petition and cancelled my pre-order. Although I enjoyed the MW SP it's not what I play for now. MP is the only decent reason to get on a PC these days.......
  8. EST is -5 from GMT, so 7pm - 10pm over here? Should be available from around 8pm, hope you don't mind late joiners?
  9. Dude, I've just eaten my tea! Is that like having a wank without getting caught????
  10. Watched Zombieland this afternoon and then read these posts, perfect timing! We'd be screwed this side of the pond though, firearms being a no-no. Still, there's a Royal Artillery barracks a mile up the road, wouldn't take me two minutes to get re-aquainted with an SA-80.
  11. Running a 580 watt Hiper PSU, so power is not an issue for me here. Gaming is much more stable now and I'm not bothered with the FPS (fraps now turned off). Only times I'm getting any lag now is when I get my broadband performance drop-off (which is a totally different other issue). See you on Friday!
  12. Happy b'day Viiper, trust it was a good one.
  13. I'm writing this realising that it's probably a stupid question BUT are you rotating the compass when you are in map view or is it's position ( in line with landmark) a result of you facing the landmark in normal view and as you say, not moving and switching to map. I'll check tonight but I've never really noticed my compass being orientated any other than the normal north/south, in the bottom right corner of the map. If you can rotate it, how? Thanks, Watchy
  14. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think you'll get this level of game play whilst "non-regular" players are on the server. TS is a definate minimum requirement, that way first-timers can be told mimimum expectations and the run & gunners can make the choice to stay or go. I'd be happy to see the parajumps go completely. I do feel they have a use, for 1 or 2 to forward scout but that needs them to be there immediately, which brings with it the grief we have already all seen.
  15. Removal of all the extra folders has worked, sounds great! Still don't understand how I was ending up with so many sub-folders, quirk of how I was un-raring the files I guess. Cheers Luggage.
  16. Like P, I've had this on for a day or so and I think I can hear some differences. I followed the install instructions and created the @VopSound2_1 folder, within Arma2 and then the Addon folder within that, so I ended up with: C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\Arma2\@VopSound2_1\Addons Then I extracted the contents of the VopSound2_1.rar into the Addon sub-folder. This instantly created a new VopSound2_1 folder withan Addons sub-folder. Within this were the various sound type folders, containing the relevant .pbo files etc. So I now have: C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\Arma2\@VopSound2_1\Addons\VopSound2_1\Addons\Enironmental Sounds..... etc When I extracted the signed files it again created a new VopSound2_1 signed folder within the original Addon folder and it contained the signed files. I copied these from this new folder to the specific sound subfolders created when I extracted the original VopSound2_1.rar. Apologies for the long post and I hope it made sense but I was certainly confused with the multiple folders being created when I thought I was extracting individual files. I get the message on entering the Sparta & B:P:R servers that I'm running the mod, haven't had a single error but IMO, I'm not hearing significant differences yet.
  17. CPU is an Intel CDd E6320, stock at 1.86 but has been clocked to 2.589. RAM is 4 gig of Kingston PC8500 with a further 4gig waiting for my Windows 7 copy to turn up. My weak point ( I believe) is the cpu but I decided on the gfx upgrade as giving me more bang for my buck, at the moment. I'm hoping to go to a quad core in the future but that will almost certainly have to be sometime in the new year. Wjilst I wasn't expecting massive fos improvement I though I would see something noticeable in the numbers. This will be the first time I've upgraded a card and not seen an instant fps change. As already mentioned the gameplay was way smoother and if I hike up the graphics settings and still have the smooth play, then it's been a worthwhile purchase.
  18. Okay, card arrived and installed, relatively easy. Used the update option to download the latest catalyst drivers (09.9). My setup is an E6320 C2D overclocked to 2.589, 4gig PC8500 and the HD4870 @ 1024mb. My previous card was an 8800GTS 320mb OC. With the 8800 I was seeing average 20 - 25fps and experienced some lag. With the 4870 the graphics are much smoother but according to fraps, I'm still averageing only mid 20's. Was hopefully expecting a bigger number, what are other people seeing and does anyone have a similar setup but getting better fps? My monitor is set at 1440 x 900 60 mhz refresh and most of my ingame settings are low or normal. Will probably try COD4 & WAW tomorrow to see if they show improvements from the 8800.
  19. They never do, having to divorce the first one just to get some peace & quiet (and gaming time). No.2 seems far more happy with the thought of gaming..... even wants to get involved! We have a LAN planned in November, with a bunch of guys she works with. It will be her first gaming experience, so i guess it could be downhill from there!!!
  20. It is cable rather than adsl and it affects all aspects of internet interaction. Tuesday night I tried to watch the first episode of Flash Forward, on Demand 5. It was fine for around 5 minutes and then was constantly buffering, so I gave up. Panic, in all the time I've had broadband and been checking, with sites like Speed Test, I've never had the advertised performance. It's always been a little of the pace. Two weeks ago at 2am on a Saturday morning it read 7.6mb, that's the best I've ever seen. I'm still at my folks at the moment, so whilst I can maybe tweak it up from 10 to 20mb not sure if they'll be happer to fork out for the 50mb. When my girls are with me they occasionally view youtube along with general smurfing but I am having this problem every day, so it does not coincide with excessive use from other machines. About 2 months ago I called Virgin to complain that the service was poor, they checked online and said the service itself was okay, so sent out an engineer to check the hardware. He checked the router and modem, which were okay and then checked the cable. He shortened it as was pushing 10 feet in length with only 2 feet between the cable box and modem. He also commented on the filter thing that was on the end of the line. Not really sure what it does but at the "rating" it was (it was 20 somethings?) he said he was surprised I was getting any connection at all. He swapped it for a "10 somethings" version and I definately saw an improvement there and then but now I appear to have this throttling issues. I'll try the user group and rant at their support people tonight. Cheers,
  21. I've been thinking about it for well over a month as with Arma I was seeing average fps in the mid 20's. I figured with the imminent arrival of the 5xxx series prices might drop some more and it seems I was right for a change!
  22. I've been with Telewest/NTL/Virgin for the best part of 13 years and never really had issues, up until now that is. The package I have should in theory give me up to 10mb downloads, I know a Which report rated them the best and said indicative speeds were around 8mb. The best I have seen has been circa 7mb, in the wee small hours and usually averaging 3 - 4 under normal conditions. However, in the last 3 - 4 weeks I have experienced what I belive they call "peak-time" traffic management. Theoretically between 4pm & 9pm my speed would be throttled back by 75%, giving a max available of 2.5mb or 1.75mb if I used my own best case of 7mb. This is supposidly aimed at the top 5% users and I can't for the life of me see that I would fit that category. Sadly, in my case, during these times I'm actually seeing an average download speed between 500kbps and 600kbps and in regard to Arma, it's becomming unplayable. I again bailed last night around 8.30, when the lag reached stupid levels & my TS made everyone sound like Norman Collier. Before I get on the blower to Virgin and point out they're all a bunch of c@#*s, I'd like to hear from others to see what experiences they are having as far as traffic management goes. And whether this is normal or do I have some weird shit, specifically happening to me!
  23. Almost taken the same route albeit under budget constraints. Have ordered (should recieve tomorrow) a HD4870 1024mb. At £114 delivered, it was a bargain and £40 chealer than the comparable Nvidia's. What are the best drivers to use with Radeon's and any advice greatly recieved.
  24. Nope, have definately righted a flipped MHQ without having a repair truck. Whether it was as part of the "repair & refuel" sequence I can't be sure but there was no repair truck.
