Saint Crispin's Day

Recommended Posts

On October 25, 1415 one of the most prolific battles of the Hundred Years' War was waged. With only 6,000 men, 5,000 of which were archers, Henry V was able to defeat the 20-30,000 French on a soggy field at Agincourt with only about 100 casualties to show for it. This spawned Shakespeare's "Henry V" and the famous speech we're all familiar with, but for those of you who do not know the context or the entire wording, here it is below.

It's not the resulting victory that makes this speech so grand. It's one of the illustrations that help define the Warrior Ethos, which is something that is rarely defined as much as "realized."

That movie is awesome dude! Being a English Literature Major for my undergrad, I had read this passage from Shakespeare on more than one occassion, but Kenneth Brannagh's (sp?) portrayal and this movie were excellent. If you have not seen it, then this is one is well worth it.
