Been looking for a pad/tablet for 4 months now, I nearly took the leap back in October

when 'Brer Rabbit' bought a 'Toshiba Thrive' fully specced with all the features I was

looking for.

FULL USB Port with host mode.

FULL SD card slot SCHD (32gb support)

Long battery.

good HD screen.

DNLA support

Bluetooth

Wifi

Android 4.0 upgrade support

Adobe Flash Player support

But I held back , finances & was trying to define what I wanted out of it.

Now 2012 has come, CES 2012 & I'm looking again. The other night I bumped into ' BILLY'

on TS3 and he too was looking for a special tablet/PAD.

I set out my top specs, knowing no pad would deliver all but some would deliver most.

When I started checking I found a new line up of tablets/pads that possibly meet my requirements.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Acer A700 is really a beauty...

Most probably will cost one arm and one leg... but is really a nice gadget. With those kind of specs can be an easy Laptop replacement.

Actually, as a productivity gadget, when you get the right software (such as Office), you can accomplish all of the most common tasks you would use your laptop for.

Besides not being able to play games for Windows a tablet like this is very nice. I am still in love with the Thrive but this one is very nice.

Mind if I ask what you intend the tablet to be used for?

Not at all:

I have a 2007 dual core 2.4Ghz laptop which at the time was the dogs bollocks ..

Now 5 years on it's still going strong, it specced in really well in those days:

Zepto Znote 6224W, Santa Rosa MB, 2.4ghz dual core T7700 800Mhz FSB, 4gb 667 DDR2, Nvidia 8600M GT 512mb, 100GB 7200rpm SATA Harddisk Hitachi® , 14.1" 1440x900, 300Mbit WiFi 'N' , Bluetooth, Vista Ultimate 32bit.SD-HD reader.

link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/zepto/135521-zepto-znote-6224w-first-impressions.html

But it has it's negatives too:

weight 2.4Kg ( 2400g), Size (14") but it feels like a slab, boot time even on win 7 64bit is a minute plus, battery life is an 1hr, a power pack is always needed (it's a work horse), it needs an accessory bag to carry it in with all the leads, charger & menagerie.

I've been looking for months for a 'pad' to do something different yet get around many of the negatives of my current laptop above.

It has to be light, compact, portable, long battery (no charger accompaniment), good screen with tough glass, SDcard slot (or micro SD) a USB port with HOST mode,DNLA support, wifi (3G is not needed),bluetooth & it has to have longevity.

I intend to:

Play HD video (720 or 1080p)

view pictures

listen to audio

surf the internet

store DATA

make VOIP connections

stream movies

play some games

record HD video

uploading to youtube & other sites alike (photobucket etc).

taking pictures

editing word documents

picking up emails

watching adobe flash content.

That's it....

I don't intend to use it for heavy applications, software development or anything I would need a laptop for....

budget is £500 approx ($700 USD)

Something that's easy to overlook nowadays are the stylus options for these tablets. I didn't think I needed one, but now I'm starting to find myself trying to write and take quick notes when I think of something. The next time I get paid, I'll be ordering a Bamboo Styluspen, in orange no doubt :) Until they start making true pressure-sensitive stylus's, I'll probably use this.

There's a cool app that I just bought for $1 called "quill" that even has different types of paper backgrounds you can use to take notes on. Like I said, often overlooked but very useful.

Be careful of large rubber tipped stylus ! you cant see the draw point,

here are some clear tip.

All you need is a device with a 'CAPACITIVE SCREEN' & app to use it with.

I will look out for one too............ :thumbsup_anim:

The Jot Touch connects via Bluetooth so it can work on any platform; iOS, Android, and Windows. The company is in talks with numerous developers to get their SDK implemented in popular applications.

There are 2 classes of Stylus types

Passive & Active Digitizer

Passive is like your finger, it relies on the stylus tip making contact with the surface

Active digitizer stylus has a transmitter in the stylus that sends co-ordinates in x-y-z of where the pen tip is.

active pens are, Cregle iPen, the Aiptek, ByZero, EFUN & maXStylus active

active pens cost around $99, passives around $20

maXStylus active - line 1mm
