Razor Black widow Ultimate (Is the backlit version of the Razor Black Widow).

Unique features: The only mechanical keyboard with macros, using CHERRY BLUE Switches, full macros on all keys & backlight.

Looking for a mechanical based keyboard ? Do you know the difference or ever used one?

Razor Black widow Ultimate, it's a few months old but I could not find anyone that had one to get a honest opinion but I researched it with other gaming keyboards and decided to try it. I was in the market & the main thing I was looking for was a solid feeling on key stroke & backlight.

It's very good and surprisingly nice to type on, core negatives are glossy case, laser etched font style & the blue backlight (the backlight is good but it's a fixed colour), but that's about it, the keys are solid mechanical full hight keys and very positive. The keyboard is 1.5Kg (+3 lb) I can recommend it for function and gaming.

POSITIVES

Mechanical switch (not membrane)

Keys feel solid & very well balanced.

Heavy weight means it stays put.

light key strokes.

5 Profiles

Any key can macro.

Any key can be any other ( total remap).

Simple to use software

Nice bright backlight (even in lit room).

USB 2.0 pass through.

Headset & mic sockets.

Tilt legs & rubber pad feet.

NEGATIVES

Blue backlight is not the best for the eye to focus on.

Case is a finger print magnet.

Font on key caps futuristic and not natural.

how far did it set you back?

IF you mean How much? £105 GB

It was pricey but it does feel good, the keys are Cherry MX Blue & feel like the original Cherry keyboards, the macro function is a big plus as any key can be programmed to be any other or macro. The three main things are: Cherry switches, backlight, macro on all keys.

@Xviiper: I'm using a black widow ultimate right now. Nice but the clicky gets very irritating very quickly. :s The new black widow stealth addresses the problems I'm finding with the ultimate (cherry mx browns, full n key rollover, and matte finish instead of glossy).

It's nice to program and type on though, and the macro keys are handy for certain features (I use my to change views in eclipse, and the occasional insert piece of repetitive code). Once you get used to not bottoming out it's actually a fairly quiet keyboard (trick is...not bottoming out. XD ).

Thinking about showing it to a relative though; she does a ton of typing and if she likes this keyboard I'll give this one to her once the stealths get run through the ringer and vetted by the market. Till then...clickyclickyclickyclickyclickyclickyclicky!!!!

I've been meaning to get a mechanical keyboard someday as well, but most are a bit too pricey for me. MX Blues work fine for gaming and typing, a very "middle of the road" key design. Browns are more gaming oriented, being quieter and easier to rapidly double-tap. But it's all subjective to how each person types. I wish there was a store where I lived to try out different mechanical keyboards. I'd like to see how they all compare.

If your store has the Blackwidows for retail then the box will have an open window that lets you tap on the arrow keys. Typing on a mechanical's about the same as a rubber dome I find until you learn to have a very light touch with the thing and stop bottoming out the keys. Once you do that then all of a sudden the mechanicals make sense because then it's just a light tap for the key to register and then you start feeling the difference. Just a word of warning, it weighs about two to three times as much as most other keyboards of the same size so don't plan on hauling it around too much.
