Old School - Historic Car racing Goodwood

The most evocative racing for me involves sports cars (which is why almost every racing game I play involves such cars). But there was an era in the 50s and 60s when sports cars progressed from enormous truck like vehicles to lighter more agile beasts. Some of the prettiest cars ever are from that time. The open sports cars raced at Le Mans such as the Aston Martin DBR1*, the Jaguar D Type, AC Cobra and various Ferrari's are amongst the best. Closed racers include Jaguars, Listers, Aston Martins, Fords (GT and Mustang) and the whole series of Ferrari 250's including the GTO and the LM.

The Goodwood revival is held annually to celebrate cars from 1948 to 1966. Owners of historic racing cars are invited to enter their cars into races for various categories. The owners sometimes invite celebrity drivers (often from that era) to drive their cars for them. These cars are driven hard despite their value.

Even though wind tunnels and aircraft technology started to reflect in the design, each car had a unique and distinguished look. But just as important is the sound which was so distinct.

Anyway here are a few of videos of these historic cars being raced at goodwood

*Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori drove the Aston Martin DBR1 to victory at Le Mans in 1959, that car (also later driven by Stirling Moss) was put up for auction for more than $30 million
