  1. I still CTD within the first minute of joining the game, if the map is in progress. If I join it empty as it is just beginning I get about 10 minutes in. It is probably client side, I am switching to Windows 7 soon. Like I mentioned before I am running Nvidia which you said might be the issue.
  2. I have been practicing with the Osprey as well, the only thing I could think of that might make it more useful is giving it an MHQ capability that would allow people to spawn at it when landed, or spawn in it when flying. I'm not sure if going about this is too much trouble, or how it would impact the game. At some point I feel we are getting too good with the MHQ's and avoiding any exercise.
  3. I was playing today thinking how it would be nice to have a longer campaign, something bigger than the 8-15 towns. As it is, you can knock through the whole map in a few hours with a full server - but increasing more towns just increases the lag. I was thinking something along the lines of World War II Online, where some campaigns could take months to complete. In ARMA 2 we could achieve something like this, bear with me. We could run a server (Private TacDom) with a standard map (8-15 towns). When the map is completed, we move onto either a more difficult setting / more options available / or a different island. So if it took a week to capture 8 towns with just infantry, then the next map would be 8 towns but more assets available and an increase in difficulty. Ultimately, we would be playing for an endgame of beating the map on expert, or moving to a new island (Return to Sahrani / Panthera). The server would be on a 24 hour day/night cycle to allow for people to enjoy night battles. Even if it was just a few guys on at a time, anything they accomplish, be it take out a patrol, a city, or fly wreck repair, it makes a difference. As it is now, once the server is restarted everything you've done for the past few hours doesn't really mean anything. I know there is a better way to go about this, what I have proposed is almost D&D mixed with ARMA. But, maybe there is another way to achieve this. Maybe even if TacDom Friday's ran on a persistent server that wasn't reset each week. Just my two cents. EDIT: Also, this would encourage mini-tacdom events, maybe just the capture of one town. So if 15 ppl are playing on a Sunday night, rather than a huge coordination requiring many hours, they can hop on the server and attempt to take a single town, with the knowledge that it is having an impact. I also might be incredibly ignorant of how the servers run and if something like this is even a possibility, if it isn't, feel free to shut me up
  4. If you are talking about Panthera, then yes. It is awesome - it isn't so jungle-looking as the preview pics making it look. There is definitely a variety, including desert, forest, and alps.
  5. I definitely agree with Kalxen. Just got off of the server with Zeno and a few others. It breathes new life into the game - the island has much more variety. For instance, the last town we took was the Rhamadi town located on the Airport island in the SE. It was thoroughly fun to assault the island, starting at a beach. Rather than the usual insertions consisting of fields or small hills. I never played ARMA I on multiplayer, so this might be old to some of you. But would love to see it get tossed into the mix on TacDom nights. It has an easy auto-installer so you don't have to worry about the folders or what not. The shortcut function is spelled out for you, so all you have to do is copy/paste.
  6. I use it all the time, but don't get too attached to it as it doesn't work in Veteran Mode. But as far as making sure that you are hitting your LZ it works great. Also, if you see a target on the map, say a BMP, but don't know that in relation to where you are - you can put a waypoint right on the icon in the map. Exit out, and you should have a marker showing exactly where the enemy is. Of course, this is really like using cheats.
  7. Thanks for the advice guys, seems this thread is making a resurgence. None of my firearm experience comes from hunting. All of it is classroom and field course training. I go to the range, but I wouldn't consider that training - just practice. In total, I've spent about 2 years of practical time learning to properly use an assortment of firearms indoors and out, as well as a variety of exercises including starting a course with a disassembled weapon. My knowledge of firearms is the result of family and friends who mostly live in Montana, where the only gun law is that you own one. In Nebraska we kept a firearm for home safety but never anything more. All of this being said, I'm by no means proclaiming to know more than your average enthusiast. I understand the ramifications and slew of dangers that come about by owning a firearm - and have thought about them for some time. My reasons for wanting to purchase a shotgun over a handgun is not purely budget related. I do know that handgun ownership in Los Angeles is a whole different ball game when compared to a shotgun. The shotgun I mentioned didn't have a stock, so when I said "Fire-by-the-hip" I meant more that I will not be resting it anywhere near my shoulder (for obvious reasons). I will purchase a stock which negates the whole subject. I've used folding stocks before and haven't noticed much of a difference other than comfort - If I have to shoot more than few times than I have bigger problems to worry about. I appreciate all the advice.
  8. The forums are on fire over there for PC users. This one jumped out at me: http://community.codemasters.com/forum/sho...ad.php?t=383840 ARMA 2 Still shows static bushes and shrubbery at all distances and settings - it seems like - in OFP2 it is an option. Im sure trees don't disappear, but bushes seem to be a bit much. Again, the difference is that in ARMA 2 the "grass" setting is just grass and midsized weeds. The Bushes in ARMA 2 are rendered separately, providing concealment against AI. It appears this is not the case in OFP2.

  10. I appreciate the advice guys. I thing getting a folding stock and a top rail will be best. Right now, I live in a fairly nice but smaller apartment complex, 6 units, shared courtyard. A handgun being discharged inside will likely go through the walls into the next unit. I think getting buckshot is just the smartest idea, hard to miss, doesn't have the penetration of a .45. It's funny about the CA gun laws - I've never had an inherent fear or fascination with firearms. I was raised by moderate parents who viewed firearms as a tool rather than a weapon to commit crimes. Which seems to be how many out here think. I don't bash on these views, but I've had to curtail some of my opinions on the matter on more than one occasion. The shotgun to me seems like a no-brainer. It's simple, reliable, and is really only effective when you absolutely need it. EDIT: Just saw your post Durka, that was my first thought as well - I don't mind what it does to the drywall, if I need penetration I will keep a few slugs on standby. Well I'll keep you guys updated on the process. Thanks
  11. Hello all, I thought this forum might provide a good mix of advice. (hopefully this doesn't spawn a gun debate amongst US and UK members I recently moved to Los Angeles CA from Omaha Nebraska. I grew up around firearms and am comfortable around them. I recently had an encounter with a squatter in our driveway which made me think again about purchasing a firearm for home safety. I currently live with my girlfriend who is not opposed to the idea, and if we do purchase a firearm, wants to go to a range and learn how to use it properly. My budget is limiting my options. This rules out most handguns, which I don't think I would want right now anyways. The gun laws in LA are more severe for handgun ownership. From what I understand, purchasing a Shotgun won't require anything more than a background check. I am finishing up a graduate program but I don't believe that will be a hinderance - I've heard only if you live in student housing will you be denied. I've been looking and I found this shotgun from Mossberg: http://www.impactguns.com/store/015813513401.html The accessories aren't very important to me, but I understand the shotgun to be reliable and good for the price. I've used similar bore shotguns, but only with a shoulder stock. Obviously this is more fire from-the-hip kind of shooting, but that's all Im looking for at the moment. Any advice on this shotgun, other shotguns, or any advice on CA gun laws? EDIT: This is my first purchase of a firearm, so my questions are more about the process. Anything I should be aware of or know in advance, other than what I can read online about the laws? I am not new to shooting, firearm safety, or the difference between munitions and gauge size. Thanks, Phisher
  12. Well on that note, I think Sunday would still achieve the goal of getting UK and US players on at the same time.
  13. I don't want to step on anyone's toes here so I am going to approach this softly, hopefully it will clear up a few questions and maybe a compromise or two. I spoke with Zeno about possibly running TacDom nights on Saturday either in addition to, or replacing Friday nights. The reason I brought this up are two fold: 1. Join in Progress: Most of the people who join midway through are from the United States, obviously we are several hours behind and there is no work around to this on Friday's. 2. Organization: By having everyone join in at the beginning, we can effectively coordinate and organize for the remainder of the day. When one member leaves a squad, they can quickly be replaced by someone who joins later, rather than large swaths of people who join throughout the evening. Saturdays would allow US players to get on in the morning and UK players to get on in the afternoon or evening. In my opinion this would give us the most coordination and give every player a similar experience, rather than how it is now where the first half is well coordinated and then slowly breaks down as the night goes on. I know there are others who feel this way, that Friday's are difficult for them to schedule because of it being a weekday and work commitments. All of this being said - I completely respect the way it is now and the decision to have in on Friday's. What I am proposing is having an addition TacDom on Saturdays - I feel this will turn into the larger scale campaigns as UK players and US players can be in on it from the beginning. Just my 2 cents, asking for what other people think about this.
  14. I thought last night went well considering the circumstances. Most of the problems people are sharing are the result of what transpired after the loss of our TS channel at the beginning. The original plan was to split everyone into manageable groups. When TS went down there was a couple hour lull, when TS came back on I noticed a few players on as well as Zeno. We started a very small TacDom game, 5 people, and were going to play very smart and deliberate. Before we even engaged at the first town we were back up to 20-25 people. This forced us to organize on the move, in veteran mode, while maintaining organized comms - it would be difficult for anyone. After the first town it got better. I was in Bravo team, assigned to attack the radiotower in both cities. We were able to insert under the confusion, use suppressed weapons to deal with immediate threats, destroy the objective and evac. I remember the second city having contacts less than 50m away and letting them pass by as we stayed weapons yellow - quite exciting. I guess where I am heading with this, is that Veteran mode made us organize - it made people listen and didn't allow them to run off and rambo, even on a micro scale. I think we should keep it for the rest of the TacDom nights. It makes the spotter and mortar team essential - and no longer can someone chute in a click away and spot everything on the map. Excluding the confusion at the beginning I thought it went very well. Smaller squads of 5-8 people are way more manageable and would be more enjoyable for everyone in Veteran mode. Essentially, normal mode is not training - the more we play on Veteran mode the smarter everyone will be. Each squad has a point man capable of reading the map and leading their squad when bombs start dropping. With Bravo last night I felt either a perceived perception of having more fun or it was genuine - my explanation for this is that the entire game wasn't filled with exploding tanks and arty drops. There were moments of stealth, quiet, ambushes and bounding cover, quickly contrasted with firefights and overwhelming AT fire. It's common sense that when you're engaging non-stop the thrill can dissipate, when you have high-points and low-points - it makes the skirmishes feel much more intense. I now feel that Normal mode is like playing with cheat codes. Wow this is getting way too long, especially for my first post. Simply put, Veteran mode made some men out of boys, it was a rocky start but eventually proved to be what I think all of us want TacDom to be.
