V8 Supercar series signs five-year deal with Formula One organizers in Austin

The Formula One facility in Austin will also host the V8 Supercar series thanks to a new agreement.

Developers behind the $300 million Circuit of The Americas track announced the five-year deal on Thursday, one day after city of Austin officials voted to endorse the project. The development is still under construction southeast of Austin, but will have enough room for at least 120,000 fans when it opens next year.

The V8 Supercar series recently earned international series sanction from The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile. It will begin rotating to Austin in 2013, a press release said.

Circuit of The Americas officials jointly announced the V8 Supercars deal with Gov. Rick Perry and Australia politician Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. Previously called the Australian Touring Car Championship, the event now cycles through Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East. It attracted bout 1.7 million people last year.

“Austin is poised to become the premiere North American destination for international motorsports," said Steve Sexton, president of Circuit of The Americas.

The facility already has a 10-year deal with the Formula One United States Grand Prix.
