M1911 Knock-off (S.A.M. Scout)

My brother is thinking 'bout buying a S.A.M. Scout .45 ACP from a friend of his for $350-$400.

Anyone know if this particular clone is any good? Most M1911's sit on the $700-$1000 price range so for such a cheap price I'm wondering what was sacrificed. Never heard of the manufacturer either, Shooters Arms Manufacturing--some company in the Philippines it seems. Unfortunately I can't find damn near anything on the net about it. Even the S.A.M. website doesn't list the Scout.

Though if it turns out to be a quality gun, I might get me one too. Been wanting a M1911 for a while.

I can't vouch for this 1911, but I can vouch for the Rock Island Armory 1911 Tactical.

Great gun out of the box. This is what I carry when I am out and about. The only real downside of the pistol is that it doesn't have a rail for a light.

It is a great entry pistol. If you are going for the punch of .45ACP, you should also take a look at the Glock 21SF.

The new Short Frame style is very comfortable and shoots like a dream.

I hope this helps.

Cool deal, I'll let my brother know. For only $475 it definitely could be something he'd be willing to buy, though personally I'm not a fan of the wood-grain grips.

In your price range, the pistol it self is worth it. You can always upgrade the grips later for less than $50 and the iron sights to night sights for about $100 maybe a little more if you want them installed by a smith which is what I recommend.

I added a grip to mine that gave me finger grooves. This made the weapon far more shootable for me personally.

These are similar and are less then $20.

@Athlon, the Springfield 1911 Operator is one of my favorite 1911s I have ever shot. It is a great all around tactical pistol. But it is a tad pricey at around $1500 for the upgraded model with better sights, springs, grips, and Akote finish.

Great pistol though.

Ya they are pricey. I have found that i shoot better with a stock .45 then all the customizeing done to them, the best mod is to get ridd of the "FAT" sights. That big fat front sight blade covers up the target in my opinion, the fine sights were alot better. But if you shoot your gun enough you will get used to where it hitts at and then one can hone in his skills with it.

The secret to being a good shooter is to know your gun to the point to where it becomes an extention of you. After shooting it enough you know where it hitts, and then some time after that sights are not needed anymore, point and hitt. A few people have acheaved this thru out history, we might have heard of them, they went buy the names of ANNY oakly, Bufflow bill cody, and a few outher gun slingers of that fame. Compatition, exabition shooters of todays fame are known to fire 50,000 rounds a year to stay practiced in the art. That is their profession and they do it well.

Most of us never reach that level due to we never shoot enough or often enough to get close to that level. Once you shoot enough to the point that you can simply point and hitt, then your getting good. Police are good shots due to they are required to shoot every week or so. Practice is the key.

I have seen the springfeild armory and tompson .45s go for $425-$450 new at the gun shows.

The best guns ever made were of the ww2 era, they had the steel hardness level that is rarely avaible today only buy the top MFGERS. There are only a few that still use that metel harding prosscess today due to its to costly to reproduce today. They do the cheap case harding, of wicth only hardends the out side of the metel. In ww2 they hardend them all the way thru buy heat soaking them for 8 hours and slowly letting them cool off in 24-48 hours. Wicth produces a metel thats so hard it can only be drilled into buy heating the metel up and useing a diamond drill bitt. One of those guns will last you a life time.

I have a inland division General Motors made M1 carbine that was made in 1944, I have shot this gun for 30 years. I used to shoot it evey weekend for 10 years solid weather permitting. And I would shoot at least 100-300 rounds thru it every weekend. It still looks brand new today and still shoots as good as it did back then.
