Well done Morgan making money already... freighter already
The first thing I bought was a class 2 shield. I never lost a ship last night to pirates. I think the shield is the key.
Like many things... the rest must be a "DAM THE TORPEDO'S" ATTITUDE!
Initially I was having a terrible time... I was spending almost as much as I made each run, on replacing sheild batteries. The enemies seem to be ramped up quite a bit. So, I tried to find a way to minimize expenses.. I did not have an optimal trade route by any means but I did okay.

Well this strat only works in the beginner zone... the rest of the universe has enemies with cruise disruptors that even out the playing field a wee bit.

I know some of you were struggling a bit with making progress in Freelancer with the Discovery mod.
Pro tips:
1. Start new character
2. Land on Planet Manhattan
3. Sell Ship and buy Patriot ASAP (might have to do one level 1 mission in the starting ship)
4. Transfer everything to Patriot.
5. Sell all the guns off the Patriot.
6. Buy the CLASS 2 SHIELD...(absolutely vital)
7. Buy Thruster
8. Buy Scanner
9. Buy 3 nanobots and 3 shield batteries.
10. Trade til the cows come home.
11. When trade Lane is disrupted, immediately hit Cruise Engines (F2 key) and run away. You will have no trouble getting away as long as you hit the cruise engines as soon as the trade lane is disrupted.
Keep the nanobots and batteries for getting in and out of Ports and entering Trade Lanes.
Does this work? Well, Ive spent about 5 hours playing and I have a Rhino Freighter fully equipped and 22k in cash, just waiting for my teammates to wander along so we can trade them into some awesome ships.
I ran my Freighter for nearly 4 hours with 3 nanobots and 3 batteries and ZERO weapons. I bought replacement nano's and batteries once.
The Class 2 Shield is the secret to this strat. It will absorb all attacks as long as you keep moving.
Now get out there and kick some Freelancer ass...

This is why I use the bundled version, everything is kept awy from the stock files.
I think Morgans problems come from his hardware, having said that I know at least one other person who could not make the Brettzies mod work.
Athlon buddy you just gave up too soon, lol.

I wont be home until about 6:30pm MST (GMT-7) So woll prolly miss the action tonight but will check in as soon as I walk in the door.
Heard some talk of a new server possibly going up for 24/7 fun...that would be awesome... hint Zath, nudge Zath..wink wink, say no more.

This mod looks very promising, I am currently testing it.
Best of all, another expansion is due at the end of this month, the Beta is already running.
I am testing the current version 4.84
The discovery mod is great..played around with a bit last week and it seemed like it was quite balanced, but provided a nice array of equipment and stuff.

Heya,
I get two results...
1) with the bundled version I get an access violation error as soon as I click on one of the 4 weapon selections... I can connect to the server but as soon as I click on one of the four portraits I crash out of the game.
2) with the unbundled version I get the 'you have altered files' message and it does not allow me to connect to any server at all. (Sparta or otherwise).
In both cases my files are in the same places as you specified in your post.

ArmA Setup

Hi MorganXwind has been hampered because our propreitary download site has not been working properly for months, hopefully this will be resolved in the not to distant future but in the meantime We have allowed non GUI access.
Because it has not been working I have failed to keep it up to date, but I will work on this over the next week or so.
Dont struggle trying to make this work, Xwind is very helpful and will guide you through the process.
We are also considering creating an ISO image of all that can be used to bring a person from 1.14 to 1.15 with all the required mods, but we can only do that when our own download site works properly.
I have tons of webspace/bandwidth to spare...I would be happy to host anything you need hosted (and provide you with FTP access..I am a webmaster by trade)... just shout if you need some space for stuff. Sparta has been very kind to me, I can only return the favor...
I'll see what i can do with the info I have so far heheeh...

Ive installed GRAW2.. patched it to 1.05.
Ive installed Brettzie's mod (both 2.05 and an attempt at 2.05b)... when I try connect to the server I get a message saying I have altered files and cant connect because I am cheating.
As soon as I get this message I have to re-install the game from scratch as nothing I do will return the game to playable condition.
I grabbed the map pack and had no trouble with that.
I can connect to the official servers and a couple of clan servers I tried with no issue as long as I dont install the 2.05 mod.
Any ideas?

ArmA Setup

Hello Morgan and welcome. I'm afraid we haven't me but I go by X-Wind (pronounced Cross Wind) and it's good to hear from you. These patches can be a bit confusing to those not familiar with them and I am usually available to help you or any else that needs it (real world responsibilities aside). The links in the post above are all valid with the exception of OPX which File Front has purged so I've added an alternate at the bottom of this post. I've triple checked the link to purchase Queen's Gambit from the initial post above as well as the others and they're working fine.If you have some time Sunday I'll be around most of the day so just grab me and I'll get you going. I'm GMT -5 and intend to be available NLT 1700 GMT (probably sooner). Server 3 is available to check out the features while Server 4 is strictly for tactical missions with a defined team based structure, disciplined coms and chain of command. If your intention is to check it out or join the tactical teams I'll be glad to help either way. There is a bit of a learning curve for ArmA like most games, particularly if A.C.E. is new to you which is why Server 3 is set up. You can also set the game up to host you on your on rig to check things out so you don't really even need a server. I don't know how much you've played the game, if at all which is why I mention it. We can sort these things out if you decide to pursue it.
Like I indicated the most time is consumed on the actual downloads. Once the files are on your PC it's just a matter of extracting them, setting up the folders and then building the path. Doesn't take long at all once you have the files but please wait to talk to me before you start the extractions so we don't lose time. Go ahead and d/l the zip/rar files and we'll go from there. Are you on XP or Vista? It's pretty much the same either way so it shouldn't be an issue.
The A.C.E servers (ArmA 3 and 4) are currently at 1.06b. You need some more files that are at the links in the first post.

If you want to try ArmA with the A.C.E. Mod D/L the files from the links in the first post sre all valid (the actual downloads are typically at the bottom of the page at BIS and Armaholic...they're not hard to find.
Don't let me talk you out of Freelancer as it looks like a great game. I'm simply setting time aside for anyone having trouble getting the mods/patches/addons setup properly.

The link to purchase Queens Gambit does not work for anyone purchasing in anything but British pounds. I am purchasing in USD. Doesnt work. Sadly, Direct2drive does not seem to have the Gold version. When I select USD and try to purchase via cred card, I get a big error page.
I finally found the download link for the ACE Island pack files. Ive downloaded those. The confusion there arose from the "Download the ACE files" text link.. which isnt actually a download link, clicking there opens the Wiki page... the small paper icon next to the text is the download link. Only took 2 hours to figure that out...
I will work on getting the rest tomorrow.

ArmA Setup

Just to let you know I'll be around most all day tomorrow (3/22). If anyone needs or wants assistance in getting ArmA setup simply let me know. It's honestly not difficult but it may be a bit time consuming due to the size of the requisite downloads. If you D/L everything and have it available we can get you set up in a matter of minutes. If you need assistance any other time we can do that as well.And you'll quickly see why it's been modded. Between the new environments (primariily Afghan Village/Avgani re:OPX) along with all of the amazing enhancement A.C.E. brings to the game it's a whole new world. Server 3 is available for familiarization of the new weapons systems (just look in an ammo crate and see how many weapons you're proficient with), recon devices (steerable parachute deployed camera fired from a 203 launcher (HuntIR). Add the new stamina models along with the ability to render aid, proper Fire Control Systems, Flares, Ruck Sacks, Dual Primary Weapons, Vehicles etc etc etc and it's a tactical buffet table!

Tried to get startd on this and was completely lost. there are no Download links anywhere to be found in the ACE pages. Just page after page of what appears to be some sort of Wiki in a section called Downloads and the section is so badly set up I dont even know if I am in the right area. In the Downloads section of the Wiki are more text links to god knows what, none of which are actual downloads.
I need something called Queen's Gambit and the link to that does not work. When i try to purchase via the provided link, it says that section has been disabled.
In two hours of trying to sort this out I have gotten exactly nowhere.
Think I am just going to stick with Freelancer.

Just wanted to pop a quick note to say thanks for including me in the Freelancer run today...I had such a great time!
Nothing better than roving the space lanes blowing the crap out of stuff and making big space bucks.

Hi Morgan,
The main problem was that microsoft retired the Global server list last year so in MP no servers will show up. We tried the tool in the freelancer\exe folder (fldirectip.hta) but couldn't connect. Their are various workarounds but they seem just to show a limited number of servers and don't act like a true master server list.
The only way we have got things working is through Xfire. (www.xfire.com). and adding it as a custom IP to your xfire favourites.
Xfire is just really handy for joining servers or seeing if anyone is on a server without launching the game. Most of the chatting features are rarely used by the spartans
You can try running the direct ip tool C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\ fldirectip.hta next time we play but you'll need to jump on Teamspeak to get the server IP and password
Floyd installed the 1.4 patch (unofficial) which you can get from the link in his post. I have the patch but haven't installed it

I've installed the 1.4 patch and been playing around with the FL Mod Manager (tried the Discovery and VOID2115 mods) a bit...sure is fun to be back in space fighting the baddies.
Are you planning on posting a notice for the next game or should I just hang out in TS a lot, til someone mentions it...? Definitely want to join in...

I have reinstalled the full game and been getting used to the controls again as has Rob. Don't worry about having to use Hamachi mate, I wouldn't let it in the same street as me let alone on my PC.
I have a laptop set up which is hosting a FL server and there is a way round the MP issue using Xfire to connect (me and Rob tested this last night and it works a treat).
We are going to keep the server vanilla for a little while to let people reacquaint themselves with the game then maybe start introducing some MODS if everyone wants them.
There is a good post Here about getting Freelancer working properly in Widescreen (it changes all the fonts and FOV so they are correct) and is dead easy to follow.
Would love to join in, been playing again for the last few days. Unsure about this whole xfire thing though. Can anyone explain the MP problems described here and how to get around them?

Yeah the folks I chatted with today seemed great...kinda like walking into a pub for the first time and everyone buys ya a pint and lets you win at darts.. haahaha...
I actually have COD4 but will have to re-install... off to do that right now. Really liked the game itself, hated the run 'n gun so I am gonna try and give the crouch game a shot. With the variety of gaming here I am sure I will find a spot or two to call my own.

Yeah seems like a real nice bunch... once I get the accents sorted out and get used to TS again I think it will be a lot of fun. Gonna have to blunder through with the old computer for a little bit which is kind of bad... but I had to do the same with GR and that turned out alright...
Really looking forward to a tactical game for a change. The run 'n gun routine gets old really fast when you cant keep up with the enemies..hahaah.

Nice to see you drop in mate and good to catch you on TS as well, let us know what you want to do about X-Winds Arma offer (don't read too much into the demo if your still keen to give that a shot first it doesn't bear any resemblance to the game we are playing right now) and we'll see about getting you squared away in here.
Demos are just silly promo things, but I was interested in seeing how the controls felt, that sort of thing. A lot of that is usually pretty constant across versions and mods. Demo was alright, but nothing like the 'real thing' I think.
Would like to give the real version a try and see how it is...

Before you buy Cod 5 make sure your graphics card can handle shader model 4.
A few guys had to buy new cards don't want you wasting money on a game that will not run. until you get the new monster LOL.
OMG! My ATI Radeon X1600 PRO only supports shader 3.0...!!! AUGH!!!
Thats not very PRO if you ask me...plus I have had problems with Punkbuster and my firewall, in the past... no matter how many times I tried to enable it in the firewall and allow it to pass PunkBuster wouldnt run.
Pro tip: Punkbuster runs as a Service in windows. If you disable the service like a dumbass, Punkbuster will never, ever, ever run even if you do write vitriol and acrimony to punkbuster support and then feel like a jackass after you discover the solution.
Okay well then I will have to invest in ARMA and GRAW2 over the short term at least, I guess...besides the ARMA group sounds like just the thing I am looking for and I like the idea of a Ghost Recon connection. GR is near and dear to my heart even though I wasnt that great at it.

I will pick up COD5 and GRAW2 on Friday..payday, you know. Hahaha. I've played a little GRAW1 and it was pretty slick so I'm thinking this should be pretty fun.
My computer is kind of on the old side, rather like its owner. It doesnt have much twitch reflex left either, but I am picking up a new 4gb monster next month so the first few games might be a little rough but would be nice to get back into the groove again.
You guys really do recon and actually use tactics and stuff? I mean, like, really for true?

A few guys play GRAW2 coop, freelancer and Arma coop, I pretty much play PvP Cod 5 at the moment but am looking forward to some new games Arma2 and OFP2.

I am very much a team player and I like to play a support role...in Joint Ops I was a medic (and a good oe too hahaha) and a pilot... for me the biggest rush was ferrying troops to the front lines in a Chinook or swooping in to drop reinforcements off from a Little bird.... in Soldner I preferred the engineer role (fixing vehicles, etc). Not much of a shot, but I always do my best to keep the team running and gunning.
Sadly, there arent a lot of games that cater to my style of play... but I keep hoping that a game will come along that lets me contribute without having to be in the top shooter list to be considered useful and worth having around...
Heard some really good things about OFP2..looking forward to it.Morgan

Cappy (DaCapt) mentioned he had found a cool group to hang with and suggested I come check it out.
So here I am to say hello and intro myself. I've been on TS several times but I havent really seen a general chat area there and I didnt want to barge into a game chat and interrupt anything. Will keep trying.
So, lets see... about me:
I'm 49 yrs old, an old hand at gaming. Currently I play WoW (been at it since day one of retail...some 4 years+). Before that I was an admin with the WGC group and I ran my own Joint Ops clan for awhile.

Getting Started with the Freelancer Discovery Mod

Okay...I have good news..and bad news:
Good news:
Ive traded my way into a 140 hold frieghter with 50 bots and 50 batteries. (and a class 4 shield).
Bad news:
I dont have a lot of cash other than the 100k it takes to buy 140 holds of Passengers to take from Manhattan to Pittsburgh.
Good news:
Each run on my current route is worth 12,000 credit profit free and clear of the 'kitty' I set aside for buying goods. My profit margin is 75 credits per unit x140 holds.
Bad news:
The trade route I have is not as good as it could be.
So... we should be all set for our group play...I can generate lots of cash for upgrades and new ships. However, I will need the squad to help me find good trade routes. As a freighter I am not much good for exploring new zones or new space/trade lanes.
If we can find a way to have people log into my account on the server I would have no issue with other members using my frieghter to trade up some cash when they are bored...
