Firearms shooting underwater?

If you want to hit a target more than 20 feet away, you'll be lucky.

I think you'll find Mythbusters did a whole program on this and found all normal air rounds are hopeless underwater.

basically the density of water effects all rounds at all speeds.

I am really surprised they work at all. I was under the impression that the propellant in the cartridge required oxygen to function properly and as such believed that firearms could not be used underwater or in a vacuum, so either the propellant does not need oxygen or there is sufficient O2 in the cartridge. Either way I have learnt something new, not that a firearm is worth much underwater.

Given that a firearm can actually fire I am surprised the resistance in the barrel doesnt cause a catastrophic failure.

I have some reading to do!

From what I read, you are right, there is sufficient O2 in the cartridge for the propellant to work. This means that technically a firearm could work in space (another thing I always believed to be impossible).

Nonetheless the underwater shot in the video would appear to be an exaggeration. Interesting though.
