IL2 a blast from the past

Recently IL2 1946 was part of the steam sale and a bunch of people bought it. We are not the best pilots but we do have a bit of fun. We have played a couple of missions with some success with semi hardcore setting (we still have unlimited ammo). We have been playing in Coop only and I particularly like missions with bombers and defending fighters. This offer opportunities for mediocre pilots like me to fly the bombers and the better players to fly the fighters, plus the bombers gun positions can be crewed. There is one mission where everyone pilots a DeHavilland Mosquito, 633 Squadron, we have had fun flying this mission.

The missions need to be downloaded and I have put a small selection on the download server here

The missions go here for steam

x:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\Common\IL 2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Net\coop

The bomber missions offer He111 and B25 bombers as well as their escorts.

We are only playing locally not from a dedi so there cannot be too many players.

Remember this is for noobs and everyone has to have fun. Take off can be challenging but we will leave the torque effect on. We will not do carrier missions for now, however if you can take off from a carrier you can take off anywhere.

This may be an old game with graphics from another era, but it works in multiplayer with no problems.

Steam is only patched to 4.09m so everyone needs to be on that patch to play, I know that there is a 4.101m patch but we will keep it simple and stick with what steam has. Following tht principal we will not be modding either. (although I have 4.101 and the ultrapack on another PC) The patches are available here for non steam users

In terms of controllers anything will do, some people have top end joysticks and some are flying with an xbox 360 controllers, for our purposes both are good.

awesome news Zeno. I have indeed seen you playing IL2 in the past 2 weeks. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do about anything the last months, but will definitely look into joining a couple of missions when possible. traveling at the moment, but should be in Belgium again during week 3, so maybe I can then join some.

in February I'll be 'home alone' as well, so will surely fly together.

good stuff and looking forward to flying with you guys again. last time IL2 was played with all of you was around 2005-2007 if I remember correctly (was living in Brazil back then)

cheers

This can be tempting if you guys decide to stick with the game for a bit.

Last time i saw it on Steam was 10 bucks, which is a great price for the full pack, just you know.. it would suck if in the next few days I ll buy it and your "passion" expires right away :)

Although i ve been flying pretty well on other Mil Sims (LockOn mostly and some F4 in the past) when I tried IL2 long time ago I sucked .. lol.. so I am glad to join a possibl Noob flight, to learn better how to keep those bricks flying :)

Catch you soon :)

Batwing, I hear you, but this is not a full priced investment. Buy it when its on sale and you cant go wrong. The planes are not immediately easy to fly or fight with and experienced players will decimate noobs. For this reason we will fly coop missions usually with a mix of fighters and bombers. If sparta interest fades again, the game has a rich modding community, as I have said I have the ultrapack 3.0 on another machine which enhances this game and adds a lot more aircraft up to the Korean era (for free). I have never been any good at this but I love the aircraft and it is a pleasure to fly them (even poorly).

I know you are passionate about flaming cliffs, but this offers many (many, many) more aircraft with a lot of wacky stuff as well.

Your call, no pressure, but no promises either.

It would require one small mod (3mb) to have AI planes flying around on a dogfight server. It's worth it though because if you get shot down or run out of ammo you can RTB. Found it especially useful for noobies who have a hard time just getting off the deck on the first try. :poster_oops:

Alternatively there are a lot of air racing maps, don't know if you guys have tried it, but it's a lot of fun! :thumbsup_anim:

Great... So while downloading this game I had a massive crash on my Terabyte storage and now is not even starting anymore....

I am pissed like a drunk monkey! Lol

Run chkdsk for the 4th time and continue finding "inconsistencies"...

Actuslly while typing on my phone is about 5 minutes chkdsk is rolling a neverending list of Unreadable files.

This is really not promising.

Thanks for the info but we just want to keep it simple, there are endless mods for IL2 which is awesome, but I dont want the headache that arma gave me. If we want to practice take off and landing we can play in dogfight mode which allows JIP and respawns.

PS I tried to download the mod, but even though I registered on the forum, I wasnt allowed to.

I have trouble taking off and landing, most of my take offs see me slithering down the runway constantly overcorrecting. I often overshoot the runway when I land (having said that I can do carrier take offs and have landed many times but only once without breaking the plane, lol) So I will practice this. But mostly I enjoy coop missions with bombers and escort fighters.

You seasoned guys can help us noobs with fighter engagements. I struggle to get on target running out of steam or stalling just before the guns are lined up.

Batwing, sorry to hear about your problems, I hope they are resolved soon.

Halli I have a Thrustmaster X Hotas its inexpensive and has enough buttons for most sims. You may be able to find an adapter for your controller my Microsoft Sidewinder has one.

After 3 hours of troubleshooting last nite i got it straight.. sorta...

I had to rebuild the Boot Sector and fortunately that helped a bit. I am still running dignostics to see if there are major corruptions, I lost a few files. Can t say what will work and what not till when I get to try somethng and will crash because some majore file is corrupted.

It sucks when shit like this happens.. Fortunately all of major data are backed up, but also the "not major" stuff are somewhat important and losing them is just annoying, especially when I just rebuilt this system with new full install just few days ago..

Diagnostic says disk is "fine", meaning that most probably whatever I write from now on is safe, probably 90% of previous data are safe as well, but i should simply reinstall everything to be sure. I already can see myself, playing Assassin creed and crashing because some hidden file is corrupted, one day... lol.. and you will hear my Owling in the Night !! hehehe

Shit happens, not much i can do about it :)

Understood on the hassle thing and will ask about the downloads. It is just fun to have the AI formations going around to attack, moving boats, tanks etc. :thumbsup_anim:

For now there is a basic bombing practice mission up on the server, it has a lot of different targets in the briefing. You're all welcome to practice on it. You can find it as SimJunkies hyperlobby or 193.164.192.15

Here is a good beginners guide with some tips on setting up controls and basic flight.

I'll be in the skies this weekend for sure. :banana_dance:

Following some "technical" difficulties, IL2 is back on the menu.

During the short downtime, Dai_San has been prepping some missions for us.

633 squadron night

633 squadron with fighter cover

633 squadron with take off from Banff (Scotland), 20 minute flight time with fighter cover

Torpedo attack on the Tirpitz with Beaufighters

As well as Dai's missions we have added a few others including 2 dambuster mission using B25s (sadly the Lancaster and other heavy bombers are not available in IL2), I have incorporated all of them into one rar, which isnt very big.

The IL2 missions rar is available here
