My GGGrand father fought at Vicksburg with the 50th Tenn Reg. He was captured at Ft. Donalson, Tn. and sent to camp Douglas(POW) then exchanged and sent to Vicksburg to rejoin his unit.

Thank goodness he survived or I would not be here!

Tennessean's fought for Tennessee, the last to leave the union and the first to rejoin.

Yep Gen. Floyd and Gen. Pillow skidattled leaving the post to Gen Buckner who was a friend of U.S.Grant and of course the famous words to Gen. Buckner after asking what conditions of surrender "Unconditional".

It makes sense that Nathan Bedford Forest left as he was Cav and could move his company quickly.

I'll have to find that book and take a read one day.

Not the best written book, but still fascinating. The whole damn Southern army could've gotten out, but they refused the intel by Forrest's scouts. Instead, folks like your GGGGfather were put in a prison camp to starve.
