NAS & Linux

Recommended Posts

Looking for some help for a friend. He has a d-link DBS323 NAS box that he's trying to do a media server upgrade. Problem is that it dumps the files into RAM before it starts the upgrade but then fails because it doesn't have enough available RAM to complete. He's very PC savvy but no experience of Linux, any ideas?

firmware version 1.05/ 1.07/ 1.08 / 1.09

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/

According to DLINK the NAS has 512MB of onboard memory....

How the fudge is he running out of MEM with a 7MB firmware?

Has he got loads of shit loaded?, ask him to unload appz from the NAS before firmware.

just a thought.

Apparently it's not a firmware update he's doing but a "media server" update, which I take to mean the software on the NAS that handles all of the data?

To make matters worse it's only 2mb in size but the box has over 100 mb of files relating to the media (not he actual media files, which seem to be relating to the location of the files in the drive.

It's this 100mb that is being dumped to the RAM at the start of the update and consequently it shuts down as it is out of memory. He's sure it only has 64mb but will check again tonight, following the comment that it's supposed to be 512mb.

might be worth making a post on the product forum: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=155.0 i've been reading though it and cant find anyone with the same error yet tho :/ but the board is reasonably busy so the chance of a reply is pretty good.

/edit, is this an official media server software from dlink (built into firmwware)? or is it a 3rd party one? found this thread for the same device http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=8196.0 but that's a 3rd part app afaik that can run on Linux or whatever OS you want. seems ppl are installing all sorts of stuff but some are getting the same error messages.
