Here's where I've contributed thus far:

There's more to it then just cut down on driving or what not; an easy example is replacing all your bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, lowering the thermostat by 5 degrees, etc.... if you have any questions on how to cut your carbon footprint or make a green contribution, let me know, I've been LEEDS Certified for 2yrs now.

So far I've done the following:

*Cut my emissions by moving ridiculously close to work, I walk a block to work now (not everyone has this privilege I understand, but saw the opportunity and took it, cheaper on me and doing my part for the environment as I drive maybe 3times a week to do various errands or activities).

*replaced ALL light bulbs in my apartment with LED bulbs that are 3-4watt opposed to 45-60. Yes expensive to buy but last for at least 15yrs and greatly offsets my carbon footprint with my PC and other electronics. Plus had a city rebate that basically paid for half of the price.

*signed up with the city electric coop to use an electronic thermostat that is connected to the grid and allows the city to lower or maintain levels of use in order to cut usage...already compared to previous place which didn't allow me to do this, I've saved 30% on my electric bill.

*TimeWarner cable offers new Samsung cable settop (DVR) boxes that have hibernation modes that trickle power instead of using alot of power even in standby mode that the Scientific Atlantic boxes do.

*Part of a coop effort to plant 5 trees a month. Its actually easy for us since there's a local contractor that brings a backhoe to the events and a few weekends ago we planted 15 trees in a matter of 2 hours between 7 of us (people).

*At work we utilize sleep modes after 10min of inactivity in order to cut power usage since we use Dell Precision Workstation T5400's and T5500's....we have a total of 125x T5500's, and 75x T5400's that each have at least a 750 watt power supply that are also 80plus silver qualified.

Part of what I posted at globalalien in regards to this.

Thanks.

For the record I never said it was funny, but there isn't a "What the Fuck" sub-forum.

this stuff is a load of shit - if the govts were serious about cutting emissions there is a lot more they could do to make a difference to carbon emissions then ppl could do.

and the ad is shyte, not clever at all.

this is why politics in forum is a no-no.

I don't believe that a single person would disagree with you. But what are you on about with the politics thing? No one brought up politics until you. Talking about Energy Efficiency is no more political than talking about guns.

I disagree Medic. The enviro talk is political talk, most enviro oriented persons aren't interested in saving the planet. Hell, the planet doesn't need saving, it's not going anywhere. Conservation of resources is a good thing, but frankly should be up to individual choice. Most of this enviro oriented crapola has to do more with people (Generally from the left, socialist and communist model as their ideal) wanting to control our daily lives in just about every way they can. If you can get control of how people live their lives, then you control and dictate how the society operates. Thus, enviro talk is political talk.

First, I have to say that must be one of the most ill conceived add campaigns ever. Not only is it in extremely bad taste, but it also provides little information about this "1010global" initiative. I dont know anything about 1010global.org, and now I am interested in finding out about them (and who funds them) simply because these ads are so shockingly bad. I think these commercials are representative of the state of public discourse and acceptable 'taste' in media - in other words there seems to be no limit to how low we can sink, regardless of the topic at hand.

I also want to point out that its not accurate at all to throw the label 'environmentalists' around when talking about this add - environmentalists come in all manner of stripes and its not some monolithic regimented movement, and the poorly conceived ad campaign of one group (or the goals/agenda of one group) do not and cannot represent environmentalism as a whole. And yeah, in case you havent guessed it, I consider myself an 'environmentalist,' and thats a board title that can mean all manner of things.

My Carbon foot print is Size 7.

It's because of jack ass ads like this from 'environmentalists' that this will always be a problem.

People 'doing their bit' won't even scratch the surface, it is industry and governments that have to do their bit for any of this to work.
