Rizz, depends on what you are looking for really. Soemthing to fit in your pocket or is size not an issue?

Just over a year ago I bought a Fuji Finepix 5700: It's an SLR style without changeable lens, has 10x Optical and 7.1 megapixel resolution. Picture quality from it is superb, never lets me down.

When launched it was around £230 but I picked it up on Amazon for £98. Reason being it was a model out of date. Not sure what the current line up is but they change them so often you can get the same deals and the Finepix range always get really good right ups.

Riz, what a minefield you do open up. Arguments will flow regarding mega-pixels, sensor size versus noise, quality of lens, number of contiguous shots, before memory overflow - offline editing. We could write a book on this.

Ok, can you go through a few elements to help the Brain's Trust/Committee steer you towards the final solution (tears at bedtime normally)

Size: - you looking for compact shirt pocket or happy to have something slightly bigger in a case hanging in gay stylee from your belt/stored in your bag?

Likely viewing of pictures - are these for 6x4 stuff or will you want to blow this up?

Are you going to post edit/alter them

Are you printing yourself or sending them off to someone to produce

Are you sure you know what you are letting yourself in for? :D

I had a good panasonic, they offer good bang for bucks, a good lens, and a good sensor....

I dunno the prices but for 200 quid you should be able to get a good one.

I had the FZ7 (sold to friends now I use a Nikon dslr)

I'd say http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Lumix-TZ...9AR2R8KJN1WTH4R

or something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Lumix-DM...;pf_rd_i=560834

picking cameras is a pain in the ass :D

i think you have a great pick there rizz, there is no way you're not going to be happy with it, and i think the HD video will be great for recording the little dood.

saw some great things about the Panasonic TZ7 but that might be a bit too much, but the TZ8 release is imminent so might knock it's price down :)

litke watchy said a bridge camera is a good option, but a bit bigger, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 is great but might again be a bit much . tbh i was suprised how small bridge camers were, like a mini slr that fits in your hand :P

You're doing right in trying to stay with optical zoom. I honestly don't know much about point-n-shoots, but I would say you don't need to go over 10mp, but don't go lower than 6mp. Look for something that has manual controls, unless you will never use them. A flash that has the option to turn on no matter what the brightness is also very important. I know there are a lot of cameras that only turn the flash on when the light is too low, but if you want to reduce shadows on a sunny day, you'll need it. I'd stay away from cameras that have what is percieved as a huge zoom factor. You're often sacrificing picture quality when you got that.
