Report...it SUX

I downloaded it, configured it, ran it and then....NOTHING.

I was swinging my head around like a bottle of gin at Courtney Love Hewitt's house...and nothing happens...natta, nothing, nope O....The screen just sits there looking straight forward.

The program must still be in BETA (see my other post) HERE

Arma2 now has freetrack support. Post any important Freetrack information here, including pics and instructions of your own freetrack rig.

what tracks your head movement and is it included in the patch????

Other than the cat?

Read a little bit on the site. You have to build an LED array, and you have to have an old webcam. Using just the software won't work lol.

Strong work there Stang. This has to be the "Duh-huh" moment of the year. OMGWTFBBQ!

:P

Well actually....you Guys thinking I'm serious could be the Duh huh moment of the year.

I have been a fan of TrackIR for about 5 years and I already know you need hardware to make freetrack work...I was just pulling Durka's chan because he didn't say you did...

Duh....LoL

I was waiting for the patch to make a post about this.

FreeTrack kicks ass. :D In a nutshell, you can have head tracking for $25 or so. That is if you must buy all hardware and materials. Many people who would undertake such an endeavor already have much of the materials laying around.

It works only as good as your point model. 99% of all errors come from hardware and point model configuration issues.

Main keys to success are -

Use Infrared light and filter out visible light from your camera. This is the only way to have it work reliably at reasonable cost under any lighting conditions. You can find a list of suitable LED's and all the info you could want on the freetrack forums, I like the Osram IR LED - SFH485P. There are many camera and point model setups (emit vs. reflect etc.).

Make a good sturdy point model and measure it accurately. It is very, very important to have your point models dimensions and location relative to the center axis of your head measured accurately. If it's off a few mm it can make things go wonky. If you're not technically inclined to do this, there are those who sell them.

There is nothing special you need to do to get it working with ARMA2 now, just enable Freetrack output (disable all others) Make sure to start freetrack before you start the game.

If anyone has specific questions ask away.

The Support Forums at freetrack.net are goldmine of info.

You can even get it working with a Wii remote control.

I'm currently trying to get one working. I can have got it working with 1 point, left right up down, etc.

I used an old bicycle light, and desoldered the leds, soldered some wire to the contact points, and wired up some IR LEDS. The OSRAM one quoted on the free track site is the one to get as they have the widest field of view.

Durka's diagram is the basic thing you need to do, very easy.

Here is a good source for the LED's

T1 - Do not waste your time with a single point model, use three point or don't bother. The problem is if you move in your chair a little left/right/up/down, it will rotate your head in game. It's annoying as heck.

If you take a gander at the point model gallery you should beable to get the wheels turning on some ideas. Doing a hat is pretty easy, here are a few shots of some I have done. The 'clip style' are pretty self explanatory.

You just run the wires around the edges of the hat, hiding them in the fabric like so..

using a bike light flasher that already has resistors built into it.

I only did the one point model to test the LED's I got, I'm working on a 3 point model which velcros to my head set and the bike light. Need to get a web cam, as Im having problems with the wii remote and Teamspeak for some reason.

BTW when I said AJSarge, I meant AlarmedBread re the LEDS in my earlier post.

Okay. I've did the three point model with the IR LEDs and a £6 web cam from Asda (Walmart).

No Joy.

However, I left a single RED led on the bike light, and Free Track sees that as bright as the sun :o

I gave up with the Wii Remote. You need a bluetooth dongle, and for some reason when I started Teamspeak when bluetooth was on, it crashed my PC. You also need bluesolei, which I have, on my other machine.

I've just tested V1 of my set up, and it works "fairly" well with 1 LED. I'll need to get some more LED's and try the 3 point model, but I'll try a new "design" for that.

Once I'm happy with it, I'll try the VX1000 Web Cam, and use the IR leds.

My soldering skills are more than a little out of date.

T1, did you take the IR filter out of the webcam? That might have something to do with it.

I don't think I can remove the IR filter without damaging the lens. I'll give it a go later in the week.

I need to get parts for V2

You most definitely want to either get a camera with a weak IR filter, or one with an easily removable filter. Then Use a visible light filter in it's place.

The OSRAM IR led's will emit a very dull red light, but you have to be in a completely dark room to see this.
