hmm... Well I think your buying some stuff that is very expensive for the performance increase your going to see.

In some cases, you can cut costs radically and drop your fps in amounts only your gpu & cpu can detect.

I have been researching to buy parts for a new system I am preparing to build as a gaming machine.

Here is what I have concluded so far.

(1) Cpu: Wolfdale series E8400 - It is the same price as the E6850, spec's are the same except it has the new 45nm manuf. tech and a larger L2 cache. (6mb)

If you like big numbers... you can go to the the E8500 that runs at 3.16Ghz (instead of 3.0Ghz) but it adds another $100.00 to the cost which isn't a very good purchase when looking at "bang for the buck"

(2) On memory, With todays systems, you dont have to buy the "super-duper fast stuff"

Instead, focus on the timing numbers. You will find good ram for alot less than the really fast stuff.

The only thing the expensive stuff provides is it can handle major O.C. numbers. So if you do alot of major overclocking get the expensive stuff.

(3) on motherboards, vid cards, etc. I prefer to stay with established stable hardware. The 8800GT or GTS seem like good buys as you can get an 8800GT for about $170.00 and a GTS for about $200.00

A good resource for information and where to find info. is at Tomshardware is:

The thing with memeory, and please do correct me if I am wrong, but you should go with RAM that is the Standard speed of the MObo. So if the Standard speed of a 1333 board is 1066 then you need to use 1066 RAM not 800.

Simple enough.

Also, on the E8400, everything I have read about it says that it is extremely over-clockable. People are getting 4.0 Ghz out of the 3 Ghz cpu.

Yes I agree with both things you said.

The E8400 is an O.C. beast. There are many reports out now showing an O.C. to 4.0Ghz

On the standard mem thing. I have been seeing alot of stuff that says NOT to buy or set speeds slower than the standard for the part.

One example is test result on Video cards where they ran lower resolutions than the stated standard and 16bit color (instead of 32bit). These tests demonstrated the vid cards were faster at the higher numbers. (32bit and higher resolutions)
