Yes, I didn't get to see any of the update but it sounds like it adds quite a lot that moves away from what the game originally was/ is now. I do think there's a whole exploration and encounters side is still not explored. 

maybe with the introduction of skins and dlc blocks they will be going more down the micropurchase line of income.

We’re excited to announce that there will be a public test on Thursday, July 25th, 9 am to Friday, July 26th, 3 pm (UTC), 2019. We may extend the test over the weekend (and beyond) depending on how the test is going.

Another big update yesterday with some free content and another DLC pack ($3.99).

I'm generally not a fan of the paywall concept either, but I don't have an issue with how Keen is doing it.

 

None of the core game functionality is locked behind a DLC. It's mostly cosmetic or "cherry on top" features. And you still have the ability to use mods to fill in the blanks if you choose to not buy the DLC.

 

The fact that the game has been out for so long and they're still listening to the community and responding to what the people want is pretty cool.

I agree, it also helps that the initial cost of the game was so reasonable and the DLCs are also nicely priced
