Win10 forced upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Well I got nailed by Microsoft's new "virus like" update that forces an install of win 10.

Although I have automatic updates off. I do have it set to downoad and hold them for my instructions to install.

They figured out how to bypass this, and force a reboot, which automatically installs the win10 package they download to you.

I got up one morning last week... came to my computer, when it woke up... I had a "Welcome to Windows 10" screen.

I aborted finishing the install by denying the EULA.

However this really upset it, and it began like a virus generating more install windows, slowly taking more and more resources as it went.

Suddenly, I had 6 permanently planted microsoft Win10 upgrade windows on my desktop I could not turn off.

The more I tried to stop it... the worse it got... so I stopped at 6 windows and went did more research.

I discovered, that many people got nailed by this new tactic from microsoft. Thankfully, a savvy programmer came up with the "GWX Control Panel"

Then installed the GWX control panel which gets rid of all windows 10 related things. which I got here: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

This even gets rid of the annoying win10 upgrade box in your task bar.

You can read about what Microsoft has done here: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3029613/microsoft-windows/new-details-emerge-about-forced-windows-10-upgrade-and-how-to-block-it.html

I do plan on upgrading to 10 eventually. But not until some significant issues I see are fixed... like core parking which bottlenecks most high end graphics cards with high texture fill rates.

I have done some research, and in windows 10, the power profile for the CPU is dictated by instructions on the CPU itself. Nothing you do in the OS can change those settings.

Therefore, in windows 10, only the CPU can turn off core parking. A registry entry like we did in Win7 will be over written by the CPU instructions.

Therefore, I am currently working with Intel to release a CPU update for windows 10 that has a "gaming setting" that completely disables core parking.

I started a thread on the Intel forums, and so far they have not blown me off. They are investigating this. https://communities.intel.com/message/379010#379010

So beware... but there are fixes. The GWX control panel works pretty well.

Personally I feel no rush to upgrade to 10. We all have until July 28 of this year to get a free upgrade... why rush before these little details get ironed out?
