I have been playing Space Engineers again. In order to fuel the Hydrogen thrusters I decided I needed a large wheeled vehicle to "scrape" the ice so I built an 8 wheeler that could support a lot of cargo weight. I found that, unlike the last time I tried wheeled large block vehicles, the wheels were more robust. So I returned to my thoughts long ago  of a mobile base. I went through a number of iterations. My favourite has 20 wheels and is able to climb out of the ice lake and descend back onto it. Since uranium is not on the earthlike planet they are powered by batteries and dock at wind turbine charging stations

Its interesting seeing different approaches to similar issues. above are links to the blueprints for the rover and trailer for mining ICE. I made in our earth like planet last year. they are small block based and is quite the challenge to manoeuvre with the trailer and can get a bit strange when its full of ice (depending on difficulty settings /creative and how much ice it can hold weight wise)

Was the trailer only pulled via a connector? If I remember correctly My "scraper" would get up to about 4 million kgs loaded. But small block was the way to go in the past because large block suspension could lose a wheel if it hit a pebble. This is still a great game.

yes it was pulled purely by the connector (the strength was whacked all the way up.) and the friction and power on the wheels of the trailers were adjusted so it was just getting pulled. 

it did suffer a lot from wheels flying off and then trying to rebuild them. was a case of driving it very slowly. look forward to seeing how a huge wheeled vehicle would work. 

looking forward to picking it back up again, with the hydrogen power generators allowing you to make electrical power from ice os very interesting. 

just got to get all my homework done first! ha ha.

I anticipated problems with wheels either coming off or needing repositioning, so taking a leaf from racing I added 4 pistons so I can lift the body and make changes to the undercarriage or replace wheels!!!! Rather you then me on the homework.

I started work on a large wheeled vehicle after your post got me thinking. 

went with the idea of having wheel pods mounted on suspension arms made of rotors giving some flex. also allowing it to sit down and then raise up for driving. 

Made the wheel parts and then copied and merged it onto a base it was working well. a script allowed control of the wheels from the cockpit as if there were normal.

I then ran into weight issues when I made the base into a solid platform and the rotors weren't able to lift the platform. so I had to add some thrusters to aid.

My intentions for the final ship/ mobile base were much larger so i plan on it getting much heavier. currently, use thrusters on a toggled override to provide assistance for lifting. then canlift and lock the rotor and turn the thrusters. and as the weight and load increases increase the override.

Adder, I have an idea what may have broken your mod that makes some of the tools not appear in the production list, they introduced a basic refinery and basic assembler this may be the cause

Yes that was my thoughts on it, when an item makes something in space engineers it effectively has a blueprint list of things an item is allowed to make so if they introduced the new items they probs changed the blueprints that the assemblers/ refineries point to. 

 

Right, I have updated it so it should be working now. (updated the existing entry on the workshop so just use it as normal) it was the blueprint from the tool was now called "Elitetools" also uploaded an update for my hydrogen mod giving higher output hydrogen engines. :)

@adder360~SPARTA~ your ore detector is working fine on my save, however the arc reactor has changed into a basic reactor and you just get a wire frame view of it, on my sp save anyway 👍

Yer they changed the model name of it. it has been updated, so everything should be back to normal. do you use it for the refineries etc? or just for ore range? I had been intending on separating them for a while and having the ore dectors as a separate mod?

I have been practicing creating a torsion suspension for my vehicles using rotors. The leading and trailing wheel sets are mounted on rotors at 90 degrees to the vehicle and the 6 inner wheels are suspended on rotors in line with its axis. The objective is to maintain more contact with the ground., This vehicle can climb out of the lake bed almost anywhere.

 

At the moment it uses a script that allows me to use wheels on the otherside of the rotors (which you cannot normally do). I have to manage the torque setting manually. Adder has put me onto another script to manage the torque automatically.

I saw this is action today and i was very impressed. Fucntion and design wise. I will probs be making some sort of rover using simular design throght.  Maybe when i finish the 4 differnt mods im mucking about with and fleet of ships im trying to build. Or maybe before ha ha

Firstly your mobile base is epic, mine is barely bigger than one of the bogies, incredible.

 

I added some finishing touches to the suspended Vehicle. this is the first version of this, I have a plan for an improved version.

When we chatted we talked about mirroring the Leading and Trailing arms so I came up with this.

Finally We talked about this system using 5x5 Wheels. Initially I tried using the same format as above, but the wheels dwarf the structure, As a first cut I mounted the leading and trailing arms on a centre spine. Eventually I will build a wider body to improve the proportions.

Th reason I adopted the rotor suspension was to increase the range of suspension travel so that these mobile bases could 1. climb out of the lake bed and 2. truly be able to roam a planet surface. So far these can all achieve the first objective.

Adder I have an idea for you. Would it be possible to create a mod where windows act as solar panels. I seem to remember reading about this possibility so it seems reasonable to add it to the game, what do you think?

I lowered Bigfoot to give it a lower centre of gravity and a wider stance, since it fell over once.

I also simplified the Rotor suspension to a rocker movement with a 20 degree range (+10 to -10). I experimented with this suspension on another vehicle and it's quite robust.

Somone has all ready made some solar windows you can check out. Im not sure the state of function as the modder has retired from modding. 

And looking like making good progress with the the rover! The orignal big wheeled one did look very higg and monster trucky!

That does work thanks, however the design is a little distracting. Good job you found this because it doesn't generate enough power to bother with.
