I know that most of you are very cautious and savvy about what you download and what you click-on, nevertheless with the festive period in full swing and many of us will be perhaps slightly sodden and out of it, I though it worth posting this as a reminder.

The ransomeware is real, and the implications of this software to data is too awful to contemplate. Whereas other software tried to con you into thinking you were encrypted, this really carrying out the process and leaving you with useless data.

BBC overview (for idiots like me)

Dell deeper overview

Let's be careful out there.

Reminds me of the U.S fbi virus that went around a month ago. microsoft security essentials will remove it and will fix it right then and there. install this now!!!!

Makes you wonder the shiftless little poindexter turd, that makes up these viruses. Were they not beat enough when the were a kid? I don't know but i know they will screw up your day.

It's mostly scam from Nigeria, blokes out there know more about computing these days and it is an easy buck for them as there are enough granny's falling for such tricks....

Friends of mine had the Dutch variant of the FBI hack..... I had to use hitman pro 3 times to get rid of it.....

Their son had accidentally clicked on a side ad on a website that is legitimate as f#ck..... even good sites have bad ads on them these days.....

Talked to a friend of mine that got ridd of the fbi virus buy useing c cleaner the virus was on mosilla firefox, and it locked his browser on win7 ,what he did was resize the page down so he could see his desk top and then grabbed it moved it to the side, then useing c cleaner uninstalled mosilla, it didnot want to uninstall, c cleaner forced it to close and then removed mosillia virus and all. He also used a unlocker tool as well . mosilla is gone but so is the virus.

If you removed it using things like Hitman Pro, Security Essentials etc then you have not come across the 'Full Fat' variety yet. We recently had a customer that had every Doc, Picture, Video, Music and even pdf's encrypted using a 128bit encryption that even the data recovery specialists we use couldn't crack. As a last resort he even tried to pay the ransom but got no reply.

Pray you don' t get this variety as it is the worst case scenario I can think of, a fully working PC except you can't get at your data. I would prefer a HD failure.

That would be even better reason to not keep anything on your pc, back it up, burn it to disk or copy it to flash, get it, and reformatt it, there is a way to win, at what cost thow

Sounds to me like need to track it to the sorce and send in a predatior drone with hellfire missles BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!

Things are getting so bad out there microsoft had to come with security essentals to stop this crap.

If my memory serves me right, MSE was originally a different product but MS took it and branded it as their own, I think.

Anyway, it's my AV of choice too.
