custard~SPARTA~
They are still light years from the US military it is going to be decades before they even match the spending and how long will it be for them to gain experience in the really important things like carrier doctrine (US could possibly have 100 years head start) they cannot steal that they have to play with those bad boys. Socially and politically China has some massive hurdles to overcome before it can use that big stick effectively by the time they are able will they even want to. They need need the US and European marketplace now, more so in 40 years, why threaten it. Smaller countries with a fraction of the military might of China but the odd Nuke (or potential to get some) are much more of a concern to me. edit: If I have strayed too far from a military chat into politics my apologies, I will restrain myself Edited November 26, 2012 by custard~SPARTA~

In a traditional, old world sense, they may try to conquer. But today, their economy is so tied with ours it would be suicide if they tried to go to war with the US. Better to bleed us dry and bulk up their arsenal now while they can and then handle things when both economies go south. I'm honestly surprised their GDP bubble hasn't burst by now. custard~SPARTA~
You see quotes from ancient history about wars being won by money I don't see that ever changing and correct me if wrong but I don't think China spends anywhere near what the US spends on it's military. China appears to be intending to build multiple carriers capable of handling fixed wing aircraft the current big boy on the block. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if by the time they have done so the US has pilotless aircraft with completely different (superior) capabilities in it's carrier capability. Elvis~SPARTA~
I'm not too concerned about China attacking/invading the US. For the last 3000 years or so, minus the last couple of centuries, China has been the most advanced country on Earth. Having gunpowder before anyone else, they didn't march around the world. They built a big wall. They also have a billion more people than the US. They also have a rival, India, with a billion or so people. Their military is fully funded by the US, paying interest on US debt. Their spending will match US spending in 15 years. The world will be different at that time. Durka-Durka~SPARTA~
Did you notice they don't use a launch system on that carrier? It's funny because I don't see many other nations other than the US using it. I wouldn't think it would be some kind of top secret technology. AlarmedBread
Is this going to hurt or help us becoming a type 1 civilization? US uses catapults because other launch methods are a bit lacking in spectacle.

Elvis~SPARTA~
Moscow agrees to sell advanced Su-35s to China and its reverse engineers Russia has agreed to sell China 24 advanced Sukhoi Su-35BM combat aircraft at a cost of $1.5 billion. It is a remarkable reversal by Moscow because Russian defense officials have accused China of stealing its earlier Sukhoi Su-27 design and making copycats known in China as the J-11B. Until now, Russia has steadfastly refused to sell the upgraded version of the Su-27 ? called the Su-35 ? to China unless Beijing promised to abide by intellectual property rights or buy at least 48 aircraft. Point 1. Diesel electric subs are well known for being much quieter than their nuclear powered brethern. The fact that it snuck within range is not a supprise at all too me. Point 2. These things are limited by the range of their batteries. once depleted they have to recharge on the surface or snorkel making them both detectable and vunerable. I bet that is the reason that he surfaced... not bragging rights. It would be more advantagious to the chinese to keep secret there ablity to penitrate the defences of an enemy.
