  1. 1:

Is there anyone here besides me who regularly plays any of the series? I'm still working on mastering at least one aircraft before I try and take it online (or I need to find a clan who's willing to let me fly on a training sortie with them). I can reliably fly the A-10C, but using any of the weapons is a very slow process still. The P-51D is fun and simple to manage versus the A-10's systems, but getting it off the ground takes a bit of practice, and landing without ILS and with the tail wheel requires some finesse. I still have yet to fly the SU-25, and I didn't get very far on the KA-50.

    2:

Has anyone else upgraded to DCS World from the standalone A-10C or Blackshark 1/2? I just did a few days ago, and it's nice to have everything centralized. I also ended up splurging for the P-51D and Combined Arms while I was at it. I still need to install Blackshark 1 and buy the upgrade to BS2 before I can play with that.

Saying that, DCS:W is a bit of an unfinished product (and has products on it that are also unfinished) and thus is prone to a few bugs. I had a graphical/sound glitch where my graphics drivers would restart every five minutes until I turned off MSSAA. Plus, (though it has a work-around) the voice files for the tutorials are missing to you have to pay attention to the text while still paying attention to the plane.

    3:

Now that there's more than just Blackshark 1/2 out, is the title of this sub-forum going to be changed to cover all of the DCS series instead of just the one game?

  2. It's been just a few months, but the F-22 is almost back to flying combat missions. Actually, they've been flying for the past while under limitations, and I see them landing all the time.

Now...F-35s replacing A-10s? I call BS. The A-10 fills a niche role in front-line CAS against armor and other ground targets that I feel can't be replicated without keeping the slow-speed maneuverability and pure ordinance capacity of the 'hog. I've heard talk about a new Light-CAS propeller-driven aircraft, and I could see that going amazingly with the SOF community and others.

  3. Do aircraft always fly that low over your house? Or are you in the middle of nowhere? He may have been doing a low-level flight for training.

One of the nice things about having lived on an Air Force base and being Aircrew is seeing some of the jets in action. F-22s are common here, and exercises always bring a multitude of different airframes to town. We were actually lined up #2 for takeoff behind a trio of F-22s today. With those fancy awesome engines they have, it's a 3,500 ft roll into a vertical climb on takeoff. Not to be outdone, the pilots of my "little" C-17 decided to ramp it up and got our 150 ton cargo aircraft (your large american pickup maxes around 3.5, a HEMTT truck 18, and an M1 is about 70) in the same amount of runway, into a very good climb out.

    I've seen F-everythings, B-2s, B-52s, Global Hawks, Preadators/Reapers, V-22s, sat in the pilot seat of a black hawk (cramped!), put a CH-47 into a C-17, and saved day-old babies.

  4. TkoH brings in things like wind, weight, and a better flight model to the Arma flight engine. If it's included in Arma 3, it'll be another step towards reality and another thing for the helo pilots to keep track of.

And there seems to be a lack of demos compared to the days of old. They used to be so useful for figuring how good games were. Now people just pirate games...

  5. I've been having a blast with DCS A-10C lately (as far as actually flying around...I'm still working on effectively killing things during missions) and am 100% going to pick this up at some point.

  6. Hey all!

About 2 weeks ago, my old HP Pavillion 2520tx tablet PC (I think, all it says is 2500tx on the machine itself) just up and died. Symptoms include: Frozen screen with very heavy shading of vertical red/black lines, squeal from speakers/headphones, and non-responsive controls. Power button off then on to a black screen, all LEDs and indicator lights constant on, HD/fans constant on. Power button off. Waited 3 hours, restart OK. 30 minutes later: crash to black screen, unresponsive controls, looping sound. All attempts afterwards result in above restart to black screen and LEDs/HD/fans constant on.

Looking online, there's various solutions from a "Hard Restart" (failed), to pulling internal parts to troubleshoot (failed), to giving the keyboard CPR (Failed), and more. A lot of what I saw was people saying that it's a failure in the connection between the graphics card/processor to the motherboard, and the only permanent solution is to pull everything apart and re-solder the parts together. Any thoughts? I don't have any of the stuff or knowledge to do that, so I'd need serious help.

    Now to the fun part...

I decided to replace it. Being that my job requires constant access to a library of 1.5gb worth of PDF files, and the uber slow Panasonic Toughbook assigned to us with all these files is used by the pilots for route tracking, I needed a replacement stat. Since the only problems I've ever had were stability on Win Vista after 2.5 years of school and work (running the HD at altitudes up to 8,500ft for hours at a time, with turbulence. I fixed that by wiping the computer and upgrading to Win 7) and this new issue, I decided on the new and improved version. Thus, the HP Elitebook 2760p. Ordering it on thursday, Newegg shipped everything to me by that Monday. It would have taken weeks to order direct from HP.

I'm loving it so far, as it's basically my old system with faster bits (the CPU is the same as my desktop, just not running as fast since there's no heatsink attached). Portability is great, being the same size as a school textbook. And the weight is heavy for its size, but still manageable (again, like an extra large textbook). The laptop, extra-slim battery, and docking station stack with little extra footprint. It does not include a built-in CD drive, but newegg included the dock, which has one as long as it is plugged into an AC outlet. As previously mentioned, it is both pen and touch-capable. Out of the box, touch calibration is spot on and pen is only off at the far corners (expected issue with the installed ). Multiple options for audio in/out, video out (1 VGA on laptop + 1 on dock), 1 SD Card slot, and multiple USB ports (Incl. 1 that's powered while in sleep mode).

Starting tomorrow, I'll take it with me on a week-long trip and get a good feel for how it stands up against the old system. If I ever get that one fixed, it'll turn into the home computer and I'll be less tempted to take some old parts I have and make another desktop.

  7. I agree with you 100% there, medic. Halli, I've had the chance to take men and women from JPAC (Joint Personnel Accountability Command) in Hawaii to various places in south east Asia, including Vietnam and the Philippines. They're the ones who go out and search for the wreckage and bodies of those MIA. It's always been going out, and not returning, though. I've also had the honor of carrying one Sgt John Hulling and a Sgt Thomas Fogarty out of Afghanistan. We got them to Germany, where another aircrew took over and got them home (why they didn't go with us, since we were going to the same place before them, I won't know). Its a somber feeling flying with heroes onboard. Thankfully, there were no passengers.

And then there's my dad. He passed away in March 2011, having retired a Chief Master Sergeant in the USAF (E-9) after 20 years. No matter who, it's always too early, and I'm saddened that he'll never see me married or have a grandkid to hold.

Lastly, it's an honor to serve now, continuing the duty that's been held by many over the years.

  8. It's the folks like you who give service members a reason to smile, knowing that someone appreciates our sacrifices. For those who say "Thank you for your service," I can only say "Thank you for your support."

Happy memorial day, and don't ever forget the men and women serving in places where all they get is another patrol and an MRE in celebration.

  9. I've got an EVGA GTX570. It runs everything flawlessly on a single monitor, and I only have to lower a tiny bit of the graphics for my 3-monitor setup.

Just note: if you play BF3, the top-end gfx cards still have stability issues. I may just have to update my drivers if NVidia has fixed it on their end. But I can't play more than 30-45 minutes without the game locking up on me. Stability is fine everywhere else.

  10. I have no idea how it works in the EU, but a lot of US carriers do exclusivity deals with phone companies. The iPhone was only on one service for a while, before the contract expired and they sold the phones to other carriers. It's probably the same with the note, and Sprint/AT&T forked over a lot of money to be the only ones with the phone for a while. Thus, limited sales. And, I haven't seen many ads for them on the TV or anywhere else.

Again, I would have bought a note if verizon had them available in my area.

  11. Bought it, played the first few missions, and am hooked. If you played World In Conflict, this will remind you of that. However, it is just a wee bit more realistic, a lot harder, and the number of available units is astounding.

So who's playing right now? I want to see how this coop works.

  12. As fancy as the raptor showboating is, the U-2 at Flight Level 700 is a practical application of that aircraft's capabilities. To put it in perspective, most commercial airliners fly at 30,000 - 36,000 ft. It's also over 1/4 of the way to these pilots being able to earn astronaut wings at 50 miles (264,000 ft.)

Added: I had to show my office off. This seems to be one of the better videos out there, and the demo program is built to show off all the maximums and minimums that the aircraft can do.

This is a "Heavy" aircraft by ATC standards, capable of carrying an M1A1, 2 semi trailers with trucks, or the equivalent of a C-130 at maximum takeoff weight in cargo. While not high compared to a fighter, it can still pull 2.5g turns with all that weight, and carry it across the pacific ocean from California to Japan without refueling. All that, run by a tiny crew of 2 pilots and 1 loadmaster. The fun part? The tactical descents to 2,000 ft followed by an Assault Landing (shown at the end of the video) to a 3,500 runway. We can then back up, combat offload cargo without the use of forklifts or other cargo equipment, and take off again. All this on hard-packed dirt/gravel runways previously only accessible by C-130s.

  13. A month ago, I got the go ahead to move out of the dorms. About 2 weeks ago, I moved into a place with a roommate. He's currently gone for 2 months, so I've got 1100sqft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a really amazing open kitchen/dining/living/den area to myself.

It took this long for the internet guys to get here and hook up the cable. It'll be another few days before I'm happy enough with the furniture and cleanliness of the place to take pictures and start having insane parties guests over.
