  1. Now that Steam is carrying a few free-to-play games, I decided to try one of them, and I think Alliance of Valiant Arms is a great game considering the marketing model.

AVA is a modern-day military-themed shooter, and the gameplay is very similar to Black Ops with a bit of Counter-Strike feel mixed in. There are three classes: Point Man, which is lightly armed but very fast; Rifle Man, which is a good all-around class; and Sniper. I've only put three hours into the game, but they were three contiguous hours; I was having a great time playing and was only able to pull myself away from the game when my body finally insisted on getting some sleep.

Like most F2P games, there is an in-game shop where you can spend real currency to buy weapon and equipment upgrades for your solider. For the most part, you would only need to spend real money to purchase weapons other than the stock weapons for each class. However, the stock weapons are quite good and effective, and the majority of the other pieces of equipment can be purchased using the in-game currency (EU credits) which you earn by playing the game. Most of the equipment that can be purchased this way is 'Expendable', meaning that the equipment degrades over time and must either be repaired between rounds (which also costs EU) or purchased again when it gets 'used up'.

I didn't get the impression that people playing with purchased items had any real advantage over those playing with stock equipment. Even during my first few rounds, I was very near the top of the leaderboards as a result of just playing smart. I haven't even bothered getting any of the items I can purchase with EU credit (not yet, at least) because I am doing just fine with the stock kits.

Over devs could also take a lesson from AVA's network coding. All games are peer-to-peer, yet I never saw any lag and the games ran very smoothly. All games are limited to 16 players.

My only complaint with the game so far is that the menus are a bit messy and more complicated than I think they should be. Other than that, for run'n'gun gameplay, AVA does a lot of things right.

  2. I was at a party last night when the conversation turned towards the subject of personality tests and how so-called experts use things such as handwriting samples or your posture to determine details about an individual's personality.

I decided that I could come up with a test that is just as valid and accurate as any of these other methods, so here it is: your PC Desktop. I've posted mine below. Please feel free to comment about what you think my desktop says about me, and please post your own as well.

  3. Some of you may not find any of this funny. I think it is hilarious.

Microsoft can be real sticklers when it comes to enforcing the Terms & Conditions for using the XBOX Live service. A lot of Xbox users get banned because they are just plain stupid. MS has a public forum where those that have been banned/suspended can appeal their case. 99% of the time, Microsoft's answer is "NO!"

You can read the back-and forths here:

    http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/41.aspx?PageIndex=1&forumoptions=::11::

Scroll down past the stickies ("announcement") to get to the good stuff.

  4. Great Vid as always Fatal, your post production is great and you manage (with clever editing) to almost make us look like we know what we're doing :thumbsup_anim:

Wow that was awesome. Was this mission recorded and then you worked in the fancy camera angles later, or did you have to do it on the fly while the game was running?

Thanks to Dai and everyone for your kind words regarding the production.

@Durka: All of the footage was recorded on-the-fly as the game was being played. To my knowledge, there is no way to record the game's "telemetry" data (for lack of a better word) so that I can replay the mission events at a later time to get optimal camera angles and the like.

Along that line of thought: one of the projects that I had in mind was doing a scripted mission/video. Most of the video footage--at least 50%--would simply be done by recording AI-scripted action. This would provide me with optimal framerates and it would also eliminate rubber-banding. However, there would be certain shots that would require human participants. The entire video would be story-boarded first. Filming the clips that require human players could probably be done in a total of four hours or less, and that could be broken down into two or more recording sessions (consecutive weekends, for example). Regardless of whether a clip requires human players or is completely AI-driven, I would have the luxury of doing multiple takes for each scene until I feel that everything looks just right.

There would probably be a great amount of time spent creating a scenario to film and doing all of the story-boarding before any mission scripting and recording even began. I think coming up with good ideas is going to be the toughest part; once that part is done, the rest is all just technicalities. :)

It will probably be some time before I'm ready to start shooting this; I'm guessing August at the moment. Until then, any suggestions for the story are welcome.

  5. Howdy folks,

After all of those hours that so many of you put into Zeno's Air Assault training, we now have a video to document our efforts. For those of you that participated in practice sessions but could not be present for the final recording sessions, you're efforts are equally appreciated.

Random editing fact: the video is 10 seconds longer than it needs to be, solely because I wanted to capture a laugh that Zeno made at the end. It just sounds funny to me, so I wanted to include it.

As usual, watch the video on YouTube. I will begin uploading a hi-def version to my DropBox account for those that wish to download copy that is better than YouTube compressed video (it is 579MB). I will edit this post with the link as soon as it is available.

*** EDIT *** Here is the download link.

  6. So far Rooster the stock cooler is doing a fantasic job...The highest temps I have seen on the card thus far have been 72c and that was under 100% load and fans were at 50%. Once the fan was put to 75%temp dropped to 63c and at 100% it dropped to 59c.

It sounds like EVGA did a fantastic job with their 590 builds--those are the same temps I get running my single-core 580.

  7. "Ball ache" was not a phrase that I was expecting Zeno to utter during my lifespan.

Thanks again to all those that participated; even without the action that took place inside the AO after the insertion, the footage of the helicopters is great. After all of the time spent practicing these maneuvers, I hope I can do justice to everyone's efforts with the video.

As to when the final production will be available, your patience will be greatly appreciated. There has been a medical emergency which has put my mother in the hospital, and my family and I are taking turns watching over her while we try to get on with our daily schedules. I'm confident that I will have something ready to post on YouTube by next weekend.

  8. At the end of the game I personally thought that it lacks smaller quests, not related to the main story, like you have them in Oblivion. But on the other hand this just is simply a signal of how much longer I would like to play in Nehrim...

At the same time, while there are fewer side-quests, those side-quests tend to be related to the main quest in some way. They are not simple fetch quests that have no bearing on the game and only serve to pad gameplay.

    @Rooster: Get Rosetta Stone!

  9. im downloading nehrim, sounds nice, I loved oblivion, but after completing the game as a mage and as a fighter, there isnt anything new to see anymore. I hope nehrim can bring something new to the game.

I'll second Kav's opinion of Nehrim; I just started playing it this past week. I would dare say that, as a whole, it is even better than the original Oblivion was. It's definitely worth the time for anyone that owns Oblivion.

If you purchased Oblivion via Steam, be aware that installing Nehrim will make the original game unplayable. If you're currently playing a campaign, you may want to finish it up or at least back up your save games before installing Nehrim.

  10. I put time into Black Ops MP because I received it as a Christmas gift; perhaps I'll actually play the SP story mode one of these days when I extremely bored, but doing so is certainly not one of my priorities. As for future CoD releases, this announcement just killed any future interest.

  11. Wow, I really hope you're joking...As far as I'm concerned, guys that give girls shotguns and laugh when they get hurt are no better than wife-beaters.

I am totally not joking. Furthermore, I am a big proponent of wife-beating because, in my experience, it's really the only thing that keeps women in line. True, I have gone through a few wives in my time (6 to be precise), and they just can't seem to keep their pieholes closed long enough for me to finish capping a flag or to finish watching a Steelers game.

However, I have already made some changes that should make my next marriage more successful: I have completed construction on what some might call a "dungeon", but I prefer to call it a "maximum-security time-out facility".

P.S. I would never give a woman a firearm and then laugh when she hurts herself with it. I would prefer to shoot her myself.

  12. I'm sure a few of you picked up 'Evil Genius' while it was on sale (or perhaps you already owned a copy). By default, the game does not support widescreen resolutions, but I have found a fix for that.

    1. Download URes Changer from here.

    2. Put the d3d9.dll and resolution.ini files into the directory that has the Evil Genius Executable:

    drive:\...\Steam\steamapps\common\evil genius\ReleaseExe

    3. Edit the resolution.ini file for your desired resolution.

The HUD elements and still screens will be stretched horizontally, but the actual playing field will display in the correct aspect ratio.

  13. I agree with this but to put all your eggs in one basket as the saying goes is a recipe for disaster.

It's like having all your assets in one place, lets say your house, where you keep all your possessions, wallet & money, if it burned down you loose it all and have no access to what was there.

If the games from steam can be played online with the STEAM client logged off, that is good... but I thought they were no available when the steam client is off.

    * Steam does have an offline mode, so most games can be played once they have been installed without the Internet connection. However, my understanding is that, after a while, you do need to eventually have your Steam client connect to the mothership, otherwise it will stop working. I don't know how long that time period is, because I've not had my PC disconnected from the 'Net for any great length of time. And, for as long as I choose to remain a gamer, I will never live anyplace that does not have broadband available. Gaming and the 'Net go hand-in-hand these days.

    * As sad as it would be to somehow lose my Steam account, they are only games, not my life savings, home, or investments. I would not only get over it, but some of my friends and family would actually say that such an event would be a good thing. Then I would likely create a new Steam account.

    * There is one downside that I do deal with by having almost all of my games through Steam these days (roughly 70%) is that fact that, every time I log into Steam, SOMETHING has to update (with Valve's damn games getting updates on a seemingly daily basis).
