  1. Adder and I have been training to improve our BVR technique using the F18, F15 and the F22 mod. I am also using the F16 as well. So far we have practiced on big IL76 transport planes and armed Mig 29s. We have an AWACS and the F18 and F16 have datalink. I am barely 1 for 1 against the Mig 29s, Adder is much better. We use the IL76 to get the longest range lock but they are very robust, 4 engine jets. Even when they have lost 3 engines and are on fire they do not die. I attacked 4 IL76s with an F16, I shot 4 Aim 120C AMRAAMs, 2 Aim 9x Sidewinders and all my 20mm rounds yet 1 still limped away in a shallow dive. It did eventually succumb to its wounds when it ran out of altitude before it could land.
  2. Whilst chatting with Custard I stated that the Rafale was not as good as the Typhoon as it could only be configured for one mission at a time. I was wrong. Both plane had the same starting point as France was initially part of the Eurofighter consortium. But they decided to go alone quite early, however the design concepts for both have the same point of origin. The Rafale differs since it was conceived as a multirole aircraft early on where the Typhoon was more of an interceptor, but later adapted to multirole. This is exemplified by its superior power to weight ratio, high altitude manoeuvrability. The big advantage the Typhoon can have is with situational awareness, if I understood correctly it can use datalink to share information about the battlespace. The Rafale has beaten the Typhoon in almost every export sales competition. But who knows what political shenanigans went on there. There are implications of bribery in the Indian purchase, and I understood that the swiss were originally going to buy the Rafale, but switched to the Gripen at the time I was given to believe that also involved bribery allegations. Finally there is a carrier version of the Rafale They are both capable planes, with the Rafale having the edge in some areas and the Typhoon in others.
  3. Stage 11 of the Tour de France is in my neighbourhood today, Sorgues to Malaucene, with a double ascent of Mont Ventoux. I have been to all of these places on my bike, I live 5km from Isle sur la Sorgue. The roads around Ilse sur la Sorgue were already full of spectators and Gendarmes at 08:30 this morning, the stage didnt start until midday.

  5. A bit of general information The ABRIS will be in Russian unless you go to options/gameplay/avionics/english For Specific planes you should go to options/special click on plane then set customized cockpit to english Right Control C to close door Note for most switches up is on apart from Ekran Hyd Trans Pwr, also this is procedure is organised in a sweeping pattern which is not in the correct order, for example after turning off the APU shutoff you should start the APU to save the battery from draining. 6. This is a very helpful video by a real chopper pilot helping to understand the different phases involved in landing a chopper, explaining the mistakes you are probably making.
  7. I have been practicing take off and landing with my choppers and the Harrier. I have the Ka50, the Huey and now the Hind. I managed to take off from Batumi and land on carriers about 12 miles out to sea. The landing were not in precise locations, anywhere on the Kuznetzov or Stennis was good enough. For this practice mission I added more ships with smaller landing areas, if I ever manage to improve my skill at this phase of flight.
  8. I tried the Mk20 Rockeye cluster bomb (aka CBU 100) using the F18 and it is spectacular. I need to use these more often for convoys and any gatherings, the area effect is devastating.
  9. Another community project, the JAS 39C Gripen mod. Initially it is a simple flight model using the F15 (Air to Air) and SU25T (Air to Ground). So you can fly the Air to ground version for free, but you must own the F15C from Flaming Cliffs 3 for the Air to Air version. The are actively working on the mod. They are currently developing the exterior flight model, the interior graphical quality as well as making it fully clickable. The Gripen is a fantastic plane and I look forward to the development of this mod, however I did have problems with braking and the chute. I used one of the longest runways on the planet to land on so the poor brakes were not a fatal problem. And now the mandatory beauty shots!
  10. A couple of years ago I built a Klingon inspired ship. At the time I built several ships that were capable of landing on 1g planets. Some used atmospheric /ion thrusters, but this one used hydrogen/ion thrusters which accelerated faster. At first it had two stock large Hydrogen tanks which was just enough to land or take off from a 1g planet. For space it carries its own 5x5 driller (which has to be left in space), a space welder (docked underneath upside down, how far space engineers has come that a ship docked underneath can survive a re-entry and landing), an atmospheric driller docked on one wing and a newly designed shuttle docked on the other. It has a refinery and cargo space as well as cryo chambers. It also has 4 jump drives. It now has 4 of adders liquid hydrogen tanks, so it has much better loiter time on a planet. Before you had to aim to land on a lake. It can use parachutes to help take off a bunch of speed, useful with the speed mod. Here you can see the driller docked at the rear. This is the atmospheric small driller docked on one wing. And this is my new shuttle with working air lock. Here is the space welder, docked upside down.
  11. This car actually has modern indicators, traficators were the little arms with yellow lights that popped out from between the doors of cars like the Morris Minor. I guess indicators were still new then so they called them the same name. It must be right as this is the Institute of Advanced Motorists. A couple of things, when on the motorway he flashes, then honks the car in front to get out of the way. I would never do that, flashing a couple of times should be enough, if you need to do more the guy in front is probably doing it deliberately. I liked the 2 finger salute when he passed, but did not understand the reference.
  12. Adder, when you have some gaming time we should take a look at Division 2.
  13. I found this gem on youtube. It's an interesting perspective on motoring nearly 60 years ago.
  14. Happy Birthday Adder, have a great day!!
  15. I performed my first successful cold start, take off and landing in the Spitfire. It was bloody nerve wracking, manoeuvring on the ground without differential braking is comical, the take off was ok but the flight was far from stable. eventually I tamed it enough to come around to land. Although the plane is intact, yet again it spun around more than 450°, my flat left tyre was the only visible damage. Still better than my attempts in the F15 which often resulted in 3 tyres shredded by my indelicate landings. The start up is quite amusing. Push throttle forward to engage electrics, then pull back. Push propeller pitch full forward. Switch on the two magnetos (ignition and starting) Open the fuel cock Rock the wobble pump to put pressure in the fuel system Unlock the primer pump then pump 3 times on a mild day, more if it's cold Uncover the starter and booster coil buttons Push throttle forward an inch Press and hold the starter and booster coil buttons for no more than 20 seconds or until the engine catches, prime as necessary When the engine catches push the main Magneto lever forward Wait for engine oil to reach operating temp. Here is a real Spitfire start.
  16. More practice landing the Spitfire and the Mustang. I managed to land the Spitfire the two times I tried. Although visually the attempts were successful, both times the plane wandered around in circles scraping a wing after I landed, but apart from a bit of paint they were n worse for the wear. In this image it appears I have guided the plane off of the runway to a service area, in reality it has spun more than 450 degrees. When I landed the the Mustang I found a few bursts of the 6 50 cals stopped her nicely. This was just a weapon test.
  17. I have been practicing landing with my beautiful Spitfire and Mustang, As I expected the Mustang was relatively easy to land, you just have to manage the braking pulses so that it doesn't tip forward and break the propeller. The Spitfire was much harder but not for the reason I expected, if you weren't careful with the speed it would stall by rolling onto a wing. I found it hard to judge as a 3 point landing requires a stall so that the plane drops gently onto its undercarriage. I tried 3 landings 2 looked like this The best I managed ended like this, which was not a write off Anyway, practice makes perfect, so I will try a few landings a day until I get it, then I will practice the take offs. I have managed to start up and take off in a Mustang, but all attempts in the Spitfire result in a crash before the plane gets off the ground.
  18. Another free Mod has recently been added (only works in open beta 2.7), it is the Boeing T45 Goshawk USN trainer. The Goshawk is derived from the BAe Hawk RAF trainer modified for naval operations and different avionics. It is free and does not require the purchase of any Flaming Cliff 3 planes, so completely standalone. As a navy trainer it is carrier capable (can interact with both the free Carrier that comes with DCS World and the Supercarrier). It is a two seat trainer and the first free Multicrew aircraft, where both the front seat trainee and the rear seat trainer can operate the plane. It is a work in progress so this functionality is not without flaws at the moment. As you can see it is really good looking. With the addition of this plane there are now 4 completely standalone free mods DCS The Douglas A4 Skyhawk, one the first standalone free mods and therefore the most developed. The Lockheed C130 Hercules. Still early in its development but the team are constantly updating it. And the Embraer A29, also under constant development. The Aeromacchi MB339 was not updated to DCS 2.7, but may be in the future. It is such a high quality model that it was ported to MSFS 2020 as Payware. So if you enjoy flying on a budget here are four planes you can fly for free to go along with the SU25T and TF51 Mustang. BEWARE These planes are like gateway drugs! Once your hooked the budget goes out of the window!
  19. We are still here, but nowhere near as popular as we were in the ArmA heyday. The most active people are playing Warthunder (tanks). You should be able to see if people are on TS using the forum home page, Browse tab. Teamspeak is shown on the right.
  20. I bought the Spitfire Mk 9 and the Mustang P51D so that I can practice engine management, on the ground and in the air. I have taken off in the Mustang, but I do not think I could in the Spitfire because of its stupidly narrow undercarriage. In the air the Spitfire is a treat. The F3 key shows the external flyby view. The noise the planes make when they fly by is magnificent. I hit F3 a lot
  21. It was the British Mustang, in the UK at the time there were few engines that were bigger. All the 250 series Ferraris were 3 litres, eventually when the Rover V8s took hold there was a bigger engine in the UK at 3.5 Litres. Jaguar had 3.8 to 4.2 Litre straight sixes. So the 3 litre V6 was huge, especially since, on the whole, engines were wheezy, long stroke 4 cylinders. Funnily enough, although my car was called the Mk 1 Capri, it was not the first Capri. Early in the 60s Ford launched the Consul Capri. It was a good looking coupe. It was a sales failure because of the success of the Anglia and the Cortina. My dad worked for Ford, so we had a bunch of them, my dad had the Poplar, the 100E and 105E Anglia, the latter being the first car a ever drove.
