  1. it should just say build the cheapest pc you can and play games on it in low res like a console except it wont look as nice, and you wont be reaching the minimum specs of games comming out this year let alone in the future.

Catchy ad, you should think about a career in marketing

As well as performance, I also believe that to be a true Steam Box, it has to be asthetically pleasing. The idea with this is to compete / replace consoles, so you would want something smart to sit under your TV, surely?

I'm seriously considering one of these and will either buy ready built or DIY and if I go the DIY route I'll be investing in a smart HTPC-style case.

  2. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it as well. I grew up reading The Hobbit, and I haven't seen any problem with the movies as far as the comparison goes. Hopefully the rest are still good.

Same here, to date I think I've read the Hobbit 14 times and LOTR 8.

I've enjoyed all of the Tolkein fims so far, even with the character additions that stray from the books, as in Legolas and whoever that Lost bird plays, in the Hobbit.

  3. Who are you with?

I had this issue with my setup, a Virgin 10mb broadband. Initially I assumed the router or modem and Virgin suggested similar, so they sent a new router to start with. Didn't really improve so an engineer came out, he checked the line all the way back to the street cabinet and eventually found a partly corroded cable, this was the issue.

Not saying it's the same for you but worth considering.

On a side note, he had no idea (other than coincidence) as to why rebooting seemed to fix the problem briefly, prior to the line being fixed.

  4. I am enjoying the specialization, its tough on your own, but with 4 you have nearly all the bases covered.

Couldn't agree more, this adds to the sense of teamwork and makes you think more about your tactics and approach.

  5. Played for the 1st time today, since release, comments so far:

No active servers, I guess due to the problems, so ran my own & tried the biolab mission.

No problems with the setup or loadouts, they're easy to setup & stay as designated.

The AI has wildly varying abilities, from the sublime to ridiculous. I experienced targets taking multiple handgun rounds at very close range without effect, single shot kills at 20+ metres, although I had no instances of targets not falling when shot, which is something I've seen mentioned several times on forums.

One thing I have encountered consistently is that after exiting, the game doesn't close down and I have to go into task manager and close the relevant process, anyone else seen this?

Still very frustrated that it's in this state but I still think the potential is good and hopefully we get the game we deserve.

  6. This is my first & only KS investment and I'm willing to give them time to fix the problems. I enjoyed the alpha play and have faith they can get this right.

Having said that, it is disappointing that out was released for such a low amount but if this ultimately becomes the game I hoped for I won't feel my investment was wasted.

  7. Thanks mate just what I was looking for to steal use for inspiration

Must be dumb I cannot see how to download it from Steam and I cannot find it on Armaholic - still looking

On the relevant Workshop page, click the "subscribe" button, it will then download. If you have Arma running in the background you will need to restart for the mission to register.

  8. Good tactical play tonight, really enjoyed myself, feels just like the old Arma 2 days are here again.

Strange bug tonight with my kit but that didn't stop the fun. Certainly felt exposed going in on the tower with just a pistol but complete confidence in NCO & Halli for cover. More of the same please.

  9. Sorted the keyboard issue and can now perform the memory flush, however it doesn't appear to have any effect on frame rate.

Played for several hours yesterday and saw better frames, in the 18-25 range. With the exception of a couple hours on Killerbee's server (PC), where I was getting 35 plus and this was with a ping over 300. But as Killer pointed out, he has a serious PC & was only hosting one game vs the typical multi servers in a box, from a paid provider.

Played for almost 4 hours on Sparta with a lot of guys, again starting in the low 20's degrading over the time to 8-11 consistently. Even then I wa still finding it playable and had it not been 02:30 would probably have restarted the game to kick the frames back up.

So I guess it's going to take an upgrade to see any real improvement and that's not happening any time soon.

  10. I've put a few hours in today, on the full release. Initially on Skaz's PC and then a few randoms plus setting up my own. In all cases I start out with a manageable 25+ but this gradually diminishes over time. After a few hours with Skaz and the guys I was routinely into single figures. Doing a memory flush was suggested which having Googled was LShift and the '-' key from the numpad, then typing "flush", for Arma 2. This doesn't work for me and by that I think it's a byproduct of my keyboard.

I have a Z Board Merc, which has a custom FPS key layout on the left hand side and as a result has a combined numpad / arrow keys / Home etc layout on the right. Because of this the numbers etc are a secondary function of the key group, accessed when the Num Lock is activated. So I'm assuming that because of this Arma isn't recognising what I'm trying to key in.

Don't have another keyboard at the moment and before I consider getting one it would be useful to know if the key combination from Arma 2 does carry into Arma 3 and whether it actually works to get the fps count back up?

  11. BTW - I loaded up this morning expecting to be on the final files, but I was still on the dev package. Once I opted out of dev, it forced a new 1 gig download of files for me.

Strange, my DL was 339mb only, that was from the dev build .77, from memory.

Would be interesting to know what other folks updates were.

  12. I played for several hours yesterday, over a number of sessions, never getting above 18fps.

However, for the first time ever (with any game) each session threw up low memory warnings, advising to close Arma3.

I'm guessing this is linked to my loss of fps, any suggestions?

I'm running a Q9550 quad at 3.2 (doesn't like to OC beyond that), 8gb ram, 7870 2gb and Arma is on my SSD.

  13. Launch Parameters

    -nobenchmark -nosplash -cpuCount=4 -high -world=empty

    Edit your cfg @ C:\Users\<NAME>\Documents\Arma 3

Change both of these to 1.

    GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1;

    GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1;

Thanks for the input Skaz but already got that done. Tried a few different servers today and was stuck between 15 & 20. This is with the dev build.

  14. Has anyone else seem a performance drop since the latest patch (early September)?

I'm now back in the realms of Arma 2 sub-20 fps, this is a drop from a very happy 35+ average up to thais latest patch.
